Gumpert Apollo Track Test

18 comments:
There are many, many intimidating numbers associated with this car: 2600 lbs, 800 hp, 664 "torques", 0-62 in 3.2 seconds, 2 turbos, $400,000 base price, 360kph/223mph top speed.

Yet, as I was making my way between the black and the orange ones, past the white "hybrid" twin fuel model with the WWII fighter ace hash marks next to the names of the world's top contenders, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, Koenigsegg, Pagani, it was another set of numbers that got to me.

They were right there, on the nasty looking green and silver car, right behind to the driver's door I was about to get in:

Top Gear 1:17.1 Record Holder
EVO 1:19.4 Record Holder
Nordschleife 7:11.57 Record Holder

Holy crap, this was going to be the tracktard equivalent of going to bed with Megan Fox!... READ ON

_DSC0020

The Circuit Paul Ricard is as impressive a facility as you are likely to ever see, it's hosts 300 events per year it has an immaculate surface, manicured plantings and all the high tech conveniences you would imagine its High Tech Test Track monicker implies.

I was there for my first European track day. I had been looking forward to it having watched with envy the freewheeling videos from some of our worldwide track day community. This particular one was extremely well run and organized by Challenges-events.com. As with many events in non lawsuit-challenged parts of the world, at the usual briefing the essential rule it all boiled down to was very simple: if you act like an ass we'll send you home. There was no waiver, there were no passing zones, no two spins and you're out, no passing signals... you get the picture. The closest I've come in the US is with the always great Group52 days at the Glen. Our Italian tracktard friend Zampa was right, having none of these artificial systems actually forces people to be more aware on track and the whole day there was not one single incident, people simply moved out of the way when appropriate. Beautiful.

It helps that at Paul Ricard there is only one place where you might possibly have a spin that might result in contact with a wall and that was by itself something really special. A track day with the less potential for damage than an autocross.

That of course makes it the ideal place to test the fastest (ok Ultima GTR fans... we know, we know) road legal car of the moment. Yes, because in today's world the Top Gear Power Board, the EVO test track and the Nürburgring are the triple crown and the Gumpert Apollo is the current champ.

So back to Megan Fox... I was to have 30 minutes with her... turned out to be more like 18 minutes because of a balky gearbox that needed some attention by the full pit crew, but hey...it was still Megan Fox I'm not complaining.

I really don't need to go into any technical descriptions of the car, that's all over the internet. You've seen the Top Gear video and no, it does not in any way look like a "boil on a baboon's butt". You've seen Tiff Needell drive it and yes, its a tricky car but perhaps it's better sorted now than when he drove it. You've seen the Nürburgring record lap and yes, it is scary fast like that.

I was taken out for a couple of laps by one of the Gumpert drivers first. At that point I had just one 30 minute session on the track so I was glad to get a couple of extra laps before we switched places. The car, I was told, was detuned for the day to "around 670hp" and was wearing thread-less Michelin Sport Cups.

Imagine an Exige but with a much tighter driving position, the seats are essentially the carbon fiber tub with padding with the detachable steering wheel and the pedals adjustable for rake. This is NOT an everyday supercar, even with the optional height adjustment for speed bumps. It does however have built in airjacks!

So you drop in and find a very close racing position steering wheel and a sequential shifter which needs a decisive pull and a clutch to operate. Once you are strapped in, unless you in fact are a baboon, someone has to close the gullwing doors for you. If you close the doors first, you'll never get your harness on...like I said, this is not an everyday supercar.

So how was it? It was amazing even driven at 8/10ths and with the traction control dialed way up. The acceleration was brutal in any gear at any speed, there is some turbo lag but it was not that much worse than CG's GT2 for example. Grip was, as shown by the Traqmate I had installed, a sustained 1.2 to 1.4G without trying. Coming out of tight corners, the car overpowered the 345/35/19 rear Sport Cups with ease and the TC made the car buck violently even with prudent throttle application.

I was expecting massive understeer in slow corners but the car had just a little bit of skating on one turn, that's it. That was impressive. The chassis is extremely balanced under braking and quite easy to catch when the rear steps out.

The shifter would take some getting used to, it has to be shoved and it was hard to heel toe, not sure if it was pedal placement or just getting used to a new rhythm that's needed, in any case I had no time to worry about that. In the in car video you will see me having trouble at the beginning trying to find second gear.

As it turns out the session was like going to bed with Megan Fox but with her mother present. Just as I was starting to get some confidence, pushing a little and sliding just a tad, mom scolded me and told me to slow down... I guess it's understandable and the all too short session still unforgettable. Even though my lap times were relatively slow, I got a little satisfaction turning a lap faster than the demo-mom did when I was in the passenger seat (I know, I know...but let me live a little).

Does the Gumpert make sense? I guess it depends. You want to win the Track Day World Championship and save a lot of money in the process? the Gumpert is half the price of the other hypercars and faster. It is probably the most hardcore hypercar save for the FXX and that's not road legal... But then again even at that "bargain" price, if you are that hardcore why are you not racing? Why ask why, just drive it if you ever get the chance!

If you have any specific questions I have not addressed post in the comments, Here is the onboard video and you can download the Traqmate file HERE.

Dale Does Evora

It may sound like some kind of dodgy movie but in fact it's our friend Dale, that BTG master of oversteer from RSR Nürburg's first video review.

I think he's right on except for the whole theory of this being a Porsche rival. Sure, it's a big as a Cayman and way more luxurious than a Exige but having seen one at Paul Ricard this past week end, I don't think Porsche is losing any sleep.

Let's be thankful for Alex Zanardi

5 comments:
Our friend Kevin York pointed out the news about Alex Zanardi retiring from WTCC racing. I think this would be a good time to post this video I had been saving for a while. Humbling to say the least. Grazie Alex, sei grande!

(WTCC-Eurosport)

UPDATE: Well as it turns out Zanardi is not retiring, he's left without a ride because BMW is cutting off the various national teams and running a single german one... so Alex, who was running for the Ravaglia BMW Italia-Espana is left out and will move to the Italian Superstar series, I'm guessing still with Roberto Ravaglia team.

Valentino Rossi was on Fire!

3 comments:
Literally... Valentino Rossi competed in an FIA GT3 race, the Six Hours of Vallelunga last week. Was in the running for a top 5 finish when, with about 8 minutes to go, his F430 did what Ferraris are known to do from time to time and burst into flames....

Was BMW Scammed?

2 comments:

"The sale of the racing team will burst because the wealthy investor behind the buyer Qadbak not exist." Switzerland's SonnentagZeitung concludes after an investigation of BMW's sale of its racing team to the mysterious "Swiss Foundation".

Soon after the sale was announced by BMW there were questions raised about the involvement of one Russell King (the portly man in the photo), a shady figure convicted of fraud in the UK in the 1990's. There were denials from BMW that Mr.King was involved in the Quabak deal . Now, according to the Swiss paper's investigation, this is not in fact the case and it turns out Quabak, rather than a "Swiss-Based foundation promoting the investment interests of Middle Eastern and European families" is more like a shady network of shell companies that all somehow lead back to King.

What's more, the bank that was the guarantor for the sale, Bahrain Capital International apparently has a fancy London address which tuns out to be shared with a number of other businesses and not to even its own phone! BCI was supposed to have the backing of the Bahrain royal family but that a'int happening leaving just.... a scam.

What's the scam? Well, if you can convince the FIA to let you in and if Sauber can come in as an existing team, you would then have access to a sizable slice of the Formula 1 revenue stream, about 40 million Euros.

Question I have about this story: is it so easy to scam some world class sharks? Was this BMW or Peter Sauber who in an effort to save the team might have been a bit too optimistic? Ferrari really agreed to an engine supply over such questions? Someone in the Middle East must have vouched for these guys at some point or did this Mr. King pull the same scam as Raffaello Follieri trading Cardinal costumes for sheik ones?

Trulli : NASCAR Superior to Formula 1

6 comments:
OK, trick headline but check it out: this from an interview Jarno Trulli gave Gazzetta Dello Sport (Italy) after his NASCAR test in Florida with Michael Waltrip Racing.

Q. What was the biggest adjustment coming from F1?

JT. Getting used to fenders, a closed cockpit and of running such mass. The proximity to walls? no big deal, you get used to them.

Q. What struck you about the experience?

JT. The car management and the tuning, which allows for infinite possibilities, definitively superior to Formula1. To give you an idea, to have the same level of adjustment in Formula 1 as is available in NASCAR you would need to completely redesign the cars. Another thing that struck me is that you need to be extremely clean in your driving, something I'm good at.

Q. And what's missing in NASCAR compared to Formula 1?

JT. Aerodynamics are essentially non existent.

Power Means Nothing Without Control

13 comments:

As was rumored and expected for months, Mercedes bought Brawn GP and dropped Mclaren from a quasi-works team to customer status. Mercedes is citing the "new economic climate" and "cost cutting" but like with Toyota, BMW dropping out, it's likely deeper than that.

Manufactures don't mind spending money but what they cannot justify is footing the bill without controlling, well... everything if they could. Bridgestone is leaving because the FIA put them in a situation where they have to produce "bad" tires artificially, what's their incentive for staying? It's not quite as bad for auto manufactures yet but you see where Ferrari was going with its "12 little indians" press release.

Mercedes "married" Mclaren when the Woking team was hot. They built a fantastic new house, they had great success but then things began to go sour. Shoplifting, SLR, economy, take your pick, Mercedes has found a new younger and less "complicated" mistress and I'm sure it's thinking that as long as it is paying the bills it might as well have her wear silver and call the shots, something they could not do with Ron Dennis.

It's not a cost cutting measure, I'm sure the pre-nupt with Mclaren was ferocious. Mercedes will sell back its 40% Mclaren stake in 2 years and had to commit to supply engines until 2015 and beyond (one might wonder how the 40% sell back and the engine supply are tied) yet from the wording of the Mclaren press release, Mclaren is not obliged to stay with Mercedes engines. Mercedes is also getting flack from its unions who are complaining that at a time when workers are getting their hours cut, management should have done a "Toyota" and use the excuse to drop out rather than go out and buy a whole new team. It's an expensive move for MB.

Engines is where it gets interesting. Ron Dennis wants to be Enzo Ferrari and had seen the writing on the wall long ago, at least as long ago as the plans to produce the MP4-12c road car with a Mclaren built engine started. Mclaren is banking on a future as a self contained manufacturer more or less like Ferrari or Porsche are/were. They already build standard ECU's for other teams and I'm sure the idea of becoming an engine supplier has crossed their minds, with teams likely to come and go in the next few years an alternative engine supply should be welcome once the FIA lifts its idiotic requirement that new teams buy powerplants only from Cosworth.

Brawn proved this year that a superior car will make up for lack of driver "star power". This is a line of thinking beloved by manufactures, BMW, Toyota and at times in the past, Ferrari have gone down that road, historically with resounding failures. Brawn's pulled it off this past season but they also had the double diffuser advantage in part to thank. It will be interesting to see where Mercedes is going with Button, Heidfeld and Raikkonen.

On Sliding...

6 comments:
Recently, a reader complained bitterly that our philosophy of trying to get as much fun out of every corner possible was wrong and that sliding the car is inefficient and a measure of how little control the driver has...not to mention a waste of rubber. To that reader we say, you are probably right about the rubber but you know what, life's too short not to have fun with it!

To illustrate my point I call upon that bishop of bloviation, that master of mirth Jeremy Clarkson and the Supreme Being of Oversteer, the Stig. This is from JC's "DUEL" DVD. Top Gear's new season kicks off tomorrow night.

USF1 Replies to Rumors, Blame "Zee Germans"

2 comments:

Formula1Blog.com interviewed Peter Windsor about the rampant rumors on the actual state of affairs at the North Carolina based team.
Windsor rubbished all attributing them mostly to "zee Germans" but also on anti-American feelings, jealousy, bureaucratic delays, internet so called journalists, Sauber and the Swiss and of course.

Mr Windsor called Peter Sauber a close friend and went on to mention how his friend sold out to BMW and should now not complain to the press especially if he is being given special favors and allowed, if Sauber were to join the party in 2010, to run a Ferrari engine rather than a Cosworth as all new teams are obliged to do.

Windsor did not really get specific as to why no American could get an FIA super license but hinted at sinister forces behind it and promised a US based development program for future drivers.

Good luck and see you on the grid in Bahrain? What do you think?

Possums Heart BMWs

1 comment:
Bud Scott from Bimmerforums found a new friend at a recent track day. This is his story and he's sticking with it:

"So I am instructing this past weekend at the annual St. Louis chapter fall DE. I am breaking in a new track toy, a POS-325e tastefully modified with some modest upgrades. Been awhile since I have had a nice Bimmer so I was looking forward to the weekend.

Saturday morning I pop the hood and much to our surprise and enjoyment I have managed to house some potential road kill.

We prodded this thing with a jack handle but all that managed to do was piss it off royally. I get the bright idea to start the car, pull to a grassy spot and shoo the thing away. As soon as we started this little critter felt the heat from the headers and scrambled out of the engine bay, RIGHT TOWARDS MY OPEN WINDOW!!!!!!! I was in full panic mode trying to get the windows closed so I would not become a critter casualty before turning a lap. He jumped off the car and found a new home quickly!

Needless to say the driver's meeting was a no holds barred assault on Bud and his Arkansas heritage. I tried to get the last shot in by announcing to the track manager that his food was so bad I brought my own. We had tremendous weather and a great turnout to end the season. And my little POS-325...............Watch out Mr. Wright I have mad dog HP and TQ now!

Oh yea..............new item on clean tech for all you inspectors out there."

Schumacher's Benetton on e-bay

7 comments:

Schumacher's 1994 Benetton B194 is for sale in Canada but listed on German e-bay.

6 days left, 130 bids and up to 1.6 million Euros? Wow, maybe Damon Hill will put a bid in?

Pictures and info after the jump...

The unique opportunity!

Benetton B194 1994 Formula One race car
This is Michael Schumacher’s first Driver’s Championship car!

This is your unique opportunity to own a peace of Formula One history!

For sale is the F1 race car, with which Michael Schumacher won his first Formula One Driver’s Championship at the Adelaide GP of Australia.
Most remembered are the scenes were Michael Schumacher had a collision with Damon hill and his Williams-Renault ending up both had to retire the race and Michael Schumacher could use his one point advantage to be the 1994 F1-Driver’s Champion.

This is a B194 made by Benetton equipped with a Ford-Cosworth Zetec-R 3.5 litres V8 engine.

The car is in condition as in the 1994 Formula One season with paddle shift and traction control. The car is in racing condition, with the painting and sponsoring scheme as in 1994.

The engine was overhauled by Langford Performance Engineering / Wellingborough (UK) and was since then just running a few minutes for test and check reasons.

As you can see on the pictures, there are a lot of spare parts with the car. The pictured boxes are full with brake, suspension, gear and axle parts. Also the complete starter equipment is with the car, including the pre-heat unit and the hydraulic charging unit. (see last two pictures). Even with the car are two sets of wheels (the mounted for raining condition and a set of slicks), front and rear wing and a laptop with software for configuration of the race car. This is just a small and exemplary list of parts, it’s a further bigger amount of parts with it.

For some F1 Grand Prix of the 1994 season absolved with this car are the FIA scrutineer passes given with the car.

The car is located in Canada / Toronto, a visit is possible and welcome.

Import duty and VAT for Germany are paid by the seller, car shipment will be done after a 30% pay down on the price of sale.

Further information are given via mail using the eBay “ask a question” function. Of course is on request a phone contact possible.

F1 light: Don't be rude to the boss' daughter

9 comments:
I mean why would you be rude to Tamara Ecclestone to begin with...even is she wasn't Bernie's daughter?

From the Daily Mail:

"'I don't think Jenson Button deserves to be the world F1 champion,' said Tamara, at the opening of Mayfair members' club The Red Room.

'He has been in it such a long time and never really came close to winning a championship. Suddenly the car is good and he's won the championship. He only won six races and they were all at the beginning of the season.

'If they'd all had the same car, then Jenson Button definitely wouldn't have won this season. Lewis Hamilton is a better driver and he's a nicer person.'

The animosity towards Button allegedly stems from a trackside interview that Miss Ecclestone conducted with Button as part of her job with Sky Sports.

Tamara said: 'He was just answering his phone in the middle of the interview and I was like: "Dude, I'm sitting here, what are you doing?"'

Vaporware...

10 comments:
Vaporware is a term associated with Silicon Valley startups that are not quite what they claim to be. USF1's first major sponsor was a huge coup: YouTube... Or at least that's what everyone thought at first. The truth was somewhat less exciting as you will remember, Chad Hurley, one of YouTube's founders had agreed to invest in the team, an unknown amount of course. In reality once the news went out about YouTube there was little effort to really clarify the situation and that's perhaps understandable for a startup looking to attract attention.

Fast forward to the end of the 2009 season and we start hearing conflicting rumors of the health of some of those new teams who are to step in and fill the gaps left by Toyota and Sauber. USF1 in particular has been at the center of a lot of talk. Yes, they showed pictures of CNC machines and autoclaves but, frankly, they could have just as well been pictures from anywhere.

Then came the announcement that USF1 would not, as was their founding principle, hire American drivers. This was blamed on the delay signing the concorde agreement and on the fact that no available American driver possessed, or is in a position to be approved for, an FIA superlicense. OK right.

Before the final GP in AbuDhabi there was the announcement that USF1 had chosen as a European base of operations, Motorland, a motorsport complex in Aragon, Spain. That is great, where are the trucks, hospitality facilities, tooling, crew...

But what I think really got people talking online is the clip the Speed TV crew (of which Peter Windsor is a part of) slapped together for their Abu Dhabi broadcast.

Ostensively a visit by commentator Steve Matchett to the USF1 headquarters in North Carolina, it struck many as odd, especially the section with the computer modeling. Take a look...

Of course you cannot expect a company to show you their secrets but from that clip it looked to many like USF1 has a different sort of secret to hide.

This week we have a quote from World Champion Ross Brawn about how USF1 has yet to crash test any of their components, "For a beginner that's strange" said Brawn. The same report has Peter Windsor as the only person at a recent FOTA meeting who questioned the rule preventing teams from selling their entry spot.

If it turns out USF1 will not make the 2010 grid was it correct of SPEED TV and Windsor to create segments that perpetuate the illusion there is any fire behind the smoke? Maybe that's what David Hobbs' double take was really about.

UPDATE: USF1 Issue Denial.... more after the jump

Interesting, right after we noticed an increase in "chatter", USF1 has issued a denial. Motorsport-Total.com asked Ken Anderson for a reply to Ross Brawn's comments and about the apparently widespread feeling in F1 circles that the ultimate goal is the sale on their 2010 entry slot at a profit.

"The stories, as usual, are wrong" replied Anderson. "We have passed all necessary tests for the moments and have more planned for November and December" and goes on to say that even if the equipment is not there at USF1, they are within walking distance from many companies work can be outsourced to in Charlotte, NC.

"Ross is right, you have to experiment and that's what we are doing, every team has their own schedule, some will not do their crash tests until February. This is not unusual. You have to spend as much time as possible developing"

Brawn had said that BrawnGP had already crash tested a number of components in preparation for the official FIA tests and was surprised USF1, a novice, had not done the same.

As far as the sale of their 2010 entry Anderson launched a broadside at BMW-Sauber " There are people who hope Sauber can be saved and dream of ways tis could happen. I hope they get Toyota's entry slot and stop annoying us" and goes on to deny the issue of selling entry slots ever came up at a FOTA meeting. "Our entry slot is not for sale and never will be" concluded Anderson. Motorsport-Total's agrees that the entry slot sale is a pipe dream at best: nobody would need to buy it from USF1 if the American team failed to attract proper US based sponsors and make it to the grid, Sauber now has access to Toyota's slot and it's far to late for any other teams to be ready for 2010.

(pardon any bad translation... via Motorsport-Total)

Super Slo-Mo is the new Rs Orange

4 comments:
We've featured super slo motion clips for quite a while, it's fun to see that they have become so popular that they are now part of the language, so to speak. The best moments of this BMW clip are that smoking rear wheel and the bug flying up in front of the rushing M3 GTS. Both moments you will recognize from past clips, the first a Mclaren rear wheel and the second from this year's Isle of Man TT highlights.

Speaking of the M3 GTS with all the articles written about it, not one that I have seen seemed to focus on what might be the main reason BMW went ahead with this project. Sure it's painted RS Orange (or maybe it's Inka Orange) with black accents, a traditional GT3 RS combo (curiously not offered in this latest version of the RS) and it's no coincidence it's called a GTS rather than the more traditional CSL. Sure it's a great halo car but the most important feature must surely be the homologation of a 4.4 liter engine for use in competition. Displacement makes torque, even with restrictors...

The Motorsport version of the Z4 is one of my favorite race cars, it's a shame that platform has never quite taken off for whatever reason as a racer in the US (well, maybe the 225000 Euro price tag for the factory made car was an issue). In Germany's VLN though they are pretty common so let's ride shotgun with Christoph Koslowski at the Nürburgring. Definitively on my list of cars I would love to drive some day!

Look at that e90 go!... that is some heroic stuff, who needs wings when you have power and balls!
In this one we are riding with Johannes Stuck..

Raikkonen will make more money going on vacation...

...rather than driving F1 in 2010.

Incredible isn't it? It boils down to Ferrari, in what can only be described as a brilliant Machiavellian move effectively priced him out of the market, Raikkonen would be paid by Maranello US$10 M. if he races in 2010 but $17 M if he takes the year off or retires!

It is said Mclaren are ready to pony up up to $15M but The Kimster is not going for any discounts and probably just as happy using the extra Ferrari cash to go rallying.... Only in F1!

Ferrari 458: First Video Review

11 comments:
Autocar got to drive and review the Ferrari 458 Italia. Stunning looking car, super bold of Ferrari to finally put a lid on the luddites and not offering a manual transmission and once again pushing the envelope as far as driver interface. They'll be lots of mooing about the lack of a manual shifter but Ferrari has the clout to tell it like it is, a gated shifter is an inferior engineering-performance solution!

Tears from Toyota

12 comments:
Toyota F1 team boss Tadashi Yamashina was apparently overcome by emotion when he announced the company would "do what it can" to help find jobs for it's Formula 1 team employees and especially the two Japanese drivers Kamui Kobayashi and Kazuki Nakajima.

Just for the record: Toyota and Honda left F1 as has Bridgestone. Kawasaki dropped out of MotoGP. Suziki and Subaru quit the WRC and Mitsubishi has called off its Dakar efforts.

All these Japanese companies announced they will pour their future motorsport efforts into Gran Turismo 5....

Japan Calls it Quits on F1

12 comments:

Honda, Bridgestone, now Toyota, as was hinted at back in August, is said to be out of the game leaving no Japanese involvement in the world's leading motor racing series.

It remains to be seen if they will continue as an engine supplier and how they will deal with the fact they signed a contract to race in F1 through 2012. Upshot is it looks like Formula 1's getting closer and closer to Max Mosley's dream of a Cosworth powered spec series and what a huge mistake it was for FOTA not to break away and be done with Formula 1 as it now exists.
