Citroens attack the 'Ring

WTCC was testing at the Nurburgring this week ahead of their first race there since 1983. The event will be a support race to this year'24 H Rennen in mid May.

Jose Maria Lopez ( you might remember "Pechito" from when he was screwed signed by USF1) was fastest with an 8:38.027 lap.   By comparison the fastest race lap by the winning BMW Z4 GT3 in 2014 was 8:32 so,  not bad for a 2 liter 1.6 liter car with skinny tires!

A lap of the Macau in Tom Coronel's WTCC BMW

5 comments:

World Touring Cars will be in that insane labyrinth that is Macau this week end. A track that is so tight a section has to be under yellow flag condition permanently, is just well, ...special.

Tom Coronel takes us around in his BMW pointing out the sites... thanks Tom, now keep your eyes on the road!

here's a bonus video from Tom

2010 Macau Grand Prix

5 comments:
The Macau track makes Monaco look like a four lane highway. With all manner of machines racing there this week from bikes to Lambos without enough lock to make the turns, it's not a matter of if a crash will happen but when and how long will it take to clean up.

As more videos become available I will add them after the jump, meanwhile, how insane is it to run bikes there?

Let's be thankful for Alex Zanardi

5 comments:
Our friend Kevin York pointed out the news about Alex Zanardi retiring from WTCC racing. I think this would be a good time to post this video I had been saving for a while. Humbling to say the least. Grazie Alex, sei grande!

(WTCC-Eurosport)

UPDATE: Well as it turns out Zanardi is not retiring, he's left without a ride because BMW is cutting off the various national teams and running a single german one... so Alex, who was running for the Ravaglia BMW Italia-Espana is left out and will move to the Italian Superstar series, I'm guessing still with Roberto Ravaglia team.

Unable to Win, BMW quits F1

7 comments:

Is that's what it boils down to? The dominant faction within BMW felt that, having spent what the company has spent in past years, it should be entitled to more success so they are turning out the lights on their Formula 1 operation.

The announcement leaves more questions than answers. The company had, up until very recently, asserted its commitment to Formula 1 and the series, still the single most watched motorsport series on the planet, is on track to become a profit center for all teams by 2011 when the agreed to budget cap of $40 million will be below team's minimums revenue share from rights and venues.

So what's going on? An immediate need for cost cutting? A revolt against Mario Theissen, the head of BMW Motorsport who has been instrumental in BMW expanding from a Formula 1 engine supplier to a full fledged constructor team?

Was it a reaction to FOTA's decision to abandon K.E.R.S. which BMW had been the strongest proponent of before the start of the season and which fit the company's "Efficient Dynamics" marketing focus? Was BMW upset because it did not get rule changes that would advantage them?

The danger for BMW is that it could be seen as wanting to be the big fish in the small pond of ALMS and WTCC now that it failed to reach its goals in the world's top series. Costs in minor series are a fraction of those in F1 and it will be argued that sedan racing is more relevant to BMW's core business. BMW has had a tough go in ALMS and WTCC as well this past year and I'm sure the prospect of some of the ex- F1 money will be welcome news to those teams.

This all played perfectly into Max Mosley's hands, the FIA has already issued an "I told you so" memo while FOTA, which BMW seemed to be a reluctant member of, responded with vague promises of help and non sequitur utterances about fan participation in decision making. Just when we thought we were out...

We feel especially bad for the people in Hinwil, Sauber deserves better than to be dropped in the scrap heap from one day to the next. We hope they find a way back to the track soon. Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld's career's are now also up in the air.

Finally I'm not sure how hardcore BMW fans will react to the announcement that BMW is viewing its future in terms of "premium" rather than pure performance.

"...a resolute step in view of our company's strategic realignment. Premium will increasingly be defined in terms of sustainability and environmental compatibility. This is an area in which we want to remain in the lead. In line with our Strategy Number One, we are continually reviewing all projects and initiatives to check them for future viability and sustainability."

That was Norbert Reithofer Chairman of the Board of BMW. While performance can be "premium" and could certainly be measured in "green-ness", I'm sure many worry Strategy Number One will turn into Number Two for the "M" for motorsport brand.

2008 World Touring Car Championship Highlights

Real Cars, Real Racing that's the motto of the WTCC. OK maybe not exaclty the cars you can buy but close enough and of course tintop racing is where it's at when it comes to spectacle and entertainment.

France's Yvan Muller (SEAT) won this year from Italy's Gabriele Tarquini (SEAT) and Great Britain's Rubert Huff (Chevrolet). Seat won the constructor's cup over BMW and Chevrolet.

Tin Top Wars, the FIA 2007 WTCC Highlights.

Seat vs BMW vs Chevrolet with a dash of Alfa Romeo for color, 2007 saw BMW clinch the championship at the last race in Macau with Andy Prioulx. Stefano D'Aste, also in a BMW, won the Independents Trophy.

Enjoy the action, tin tops are always the best that way...Don't miss that scary flip Augusto Farfus had at the beginning of the season at Pau.

A lesson in momentum racing, WTCC @ Monza

No comments:

Here is a clip of the complete 18 minute race2 from this year's WTCC stop at Monza.

The "gooooooooool" style commentary is worth it just in of itself, man the guy has some lungs! A priceless moment you'll catch is when he yells : "...Deeerk Müller, Deeeerk, Deeeerk Deeerk Müller..." Hilarious.

It's a great race with Alessandro Zanardi in the 2 liter BMW really hounding Augusto Farfus in the Alfa 156. These cars look so much meaner that the Speedvision touring cars we have here in the US. The racing just seems a touch more ruthless as well.

Look at the insane amount of speed they carry in the turns, the cars are very even so that any little time lost is a real killer down the long Monza straights.

Some pretty nasty crashes about halfway through. Enjoy
