No, it's not an outtake from Furious 6, it's the real thing and it made photographers shooting this jump at the Tour of Sperrins rally in Northern Ireland check their underwear...
At the controls, Captain Frank Kelly who recommends you keep your seat belts fastened at all times and your tray tables folded.
Flogging a race prepped GT2 on Michelin tarmac "slicks" on a damp, leafy mountain road with only small trees between you and an abyss well, that would take some major, major balls.
But then again, you are not a French rally driver are you?
It's not uncommon in France for Porsches to be used for rallying and that is just cool.
Sure it's slower but there is something about a RWD car wrestling switchbacks that's will invariably warm the cockles of even the most anti-luddites among us, the same way Roser will always be cooler than Block.
Gilles Nantet used to campaign a 997 GT3 until a nasty crash ended his 2013 season early. Clearly, this did not dampen his spirit or sense of humor because you do need a good sense of humor to choose GT2 as your next act after a big one like that!
So Gilles, vous êtes un "magnificent bastard" and Axis salutes you!
Now, if you have any experience driving at Watkins Glen I don't have to tell you a lap like that in an fairly stock Mini Cooper S street car (with Hoosiers) is phenomenal. The Driver is Bob Pielli Jr. a fellow Group 52 track rat and at the time we had had featured the video on Axis. A couple of weeks ago, Bob got in touch with us with a picture and to say both him and the Mini had, in the ensuing years had a bit of an...intervention.
If you're reading this I'm guessing the idea of a rear wheel drive mini with the engine in the boot tickles all the right spots so, I'll let Bob tell you about how it all came about.
We'll keep you up to date on the project as it moves along. Cheers Bob and Gregg, you are true maniacs! Love it.
The Isle of Man TT is generally regarded as the peak of motorsport insanity, riders hurling themselves at 200 mph between trees and stone walls. But for as crazy as that is, it still essentially a time trial.
Irish National Road Racing is wheel to wheel combat on narrow country roads, often lined with sidewalks or barbed wire. It is beyond insane and perpetually on the cusp of being banned. An almost unknown sport outside of its relatively small fan base, amateur racers with a complete disdain for runoff area and safety barriers have gathered for years in places like Skerries, Tandragee, Killalane, to race on narrow roads and over big jumps.
"Road racing's dangerous, yeah but it shouldn't be stopped" said Carl Fogarty" if you don't want to do it, don't do it"
Guy Martin has no time for race tracks "It's all tire walls and safety barriers, I'm not interested, I like a bit of danger"
That one would choose to use a Porsche 962 on the street is silly and more about showing off than driving because you know, racecar. But to each their own and we'll concentrate of celebrating the insanity of all those who turn racers into something else. That and this clip, by Luke Huxham, looks fantastic.
Incredibly this this is not a Monty Python skit but something that really happened.
Move if the "race"? It has to be the Toyota driver spinning, slamming it in reverse and flooring it to rejoin the race...backwards! Good times.
When I see those on-boards at 175 mph threading the needle between stone walls, one question always comes to mind: does it not hurt as hell riding 38 mile laps sitting on your giant balls?
Summit Point Raceway in West Virginia is notorious for wildlife intrusions. A varmint chicane can appear at any time and any place but the favorite spot seems to be just before Turn 1, coincidentally the fastest spot on the track.
That annual Race, Drift, Beer and Boobs festival that is Hyperfest took place over the week end and while most had a great time, the driver of this C5 Z06 was probably not in the mood for venison.
Want to see a video of what hitting Bambi well north of 100 mph looks like?
This may be one of the most epic F1 shots ever but no doubt the race was an epic clown show
Next time you feel like complaining about Formula One's odd rule and regulatory decisions, consider the 1970 Spanish Grand Prix and you'll go light a candle to Saint Bernie Ecclestone.
No qualifying required for "celebrity" drivers and teams, a scuffle with police on the grid, the race not stopped despite a huge active fire and fire fighting foam spread across the racing circuit (actually, Bernie might some ideas there...), only five out of sixteen cars cross the finish line.
Remember it before you pine for the good ol'days.
The sheer insanity of this car alone is worth your time watching the clip from DRIVE. That and the fact that, being a Lotus, will probably explode again tomorrow.
...because what else do you do while waiting for the Isle of Man TT?
Thing is, the TT is essentially a race against the clock, the Macau Motorcycle GP is actual wheel to wheel action. on the plus side, they can pass in the tight section!
