Squeaky Huayra

There are two options here:

A. The $1.4 Million Pagani Huayra has the build quality of a 1986 Yugo

B. Evo, the first magazine to get their hands on Horacio's latest creation really did him a favor with this video...


Also, it it me or the car looks awful coming out of corners, like it really wants to tankslap?

Well I'm not going to say anything but what would you rather, the über Supra or the big Fiat?

A perk of being the millionaire publisher of the best Car magazine on the planet is that you get invited to the Costa Smeralda to ride around in the new, amazing Huayra with Horacio Pagani himself. Takes considerable bravery to drive a 720 hp twin turbo that fast on tight and dusty sardinian roads!

Not much I can add to this great video clip by Harry Metcalfe other that perhaps, that the idea of a car inspired "by an airplane taking off" is not really what tracktards want to hear necessarily (like they are buying Paganis anyway...ha!).
But, damn the Huayra does sound and look like a fighter on afterburners.

Mclaren MP4-12C vs Ferrari 458: Ouch!

Some interesting previews of an upcoming super test from EVO have hit the net and Mclaren comes out looking a bit like Lewis Hamilton's chin strap beard.

The test pitted the MP4-12c against the 458 Italia, the Porsche Turbo S, Mercedes SLS, Ford GT and the Noble M600.

Here are some of the more surprising figures:

Mclaren weighed in at 1433 kg/3159 lbs with the carbon brake option, the 458 at 1469 kg/3238 lbs a much smaller weight delta than I imagined.


And the track time at the Bedford Autodrome:

Mp4-12c: 1:20.6
458: 1:19.3

Mclaren had sent a full sized technical support team with the car for the test (where is the outrage Mr. Harris?) who then fitted Pirelli Corsas on the MP4.... they still lost, 1:19.6 , The Ferrari was on Michelin Super Sports.

More troubling for Mclaren are reports magazine testers found the handling "unrewarding", the brakes laking feel and the ride "citroen like" (yikes) at regular road speeds. at fast road speeds the MP4 "...suddenly feels all at sea, with only moderate loadings to deal with, the strange Citroen like ride reactions are back and the chassis feels out of tune with road''

Harris monkeys with the McLaren Mp4-12c

Nice review, missing one obvious question from our tracktard point of view: in the rain we would have put the engine to "track" but the suspension on "soft", can you do that on the. 12c?? I certainly hope the answer is yes...

But what I'm guessing is that keeping it in stiff mode in the wet is the only way to get some photo friendly slides going in this, the only super car I'm aware of with an open differential, a car not even Lewis Hamilton can slide properly as the video after the jump suggests...

I think he gets it mostly right. Me, I would rather have the extra camber in the front, not so much the back but hey...so I don't like understeer, sue me!

Caparo T1 at the 'Ring Video

I don't think it actually set any records when it ran there in August, in fact, word was it spent most of the time getting worked on. But the video shows that when it actually ran, the Caparo T1 is...rather quick! What it certainly is not is a road car but that's another story. Check it out

The "stock" 997 GT3 RS at the 'Ring

This is the 997 GT3 RS street car that Porsche is racing at the 24 Hours of the Nürburgring in May and that had it's debut at the VLN race last week. At that race the car finished and placed 22nd overall.

It's not quite stock, it has different springs and has a re-calibrated traction control and obviously a cage and no passenger seat

Driving in the video is "Uncle" Walter Röhrl driving. Hi co-drivers will be Nürburgring specialist Horst Von Saurma and journalist Chris Harris from EVO.

Just Because He Can...

So you think you have a good job? EVO's Chris Harris announced he will be running in this year's Nürburgring 24 Hours in a "stock" Porsche GT3 RS. One of his co-drivers? one Walter Röhrl... How cool is that?

Harris writes:

Still, musn’t grumble, you see I’m going to have plenty of seat time in an RS over the coming months: I’m driving one at the Nurburgring 24hrs this year and (I’m pinching myself and grinning like a school child typing this), my team mate is called Walter Rohrl. For that opportunity, I’d happily spend hours – months even - dawdling about a snowy Cote D’Azur.

Yeah... we feel your pain Harris!

Readers of this site will be familiar with that Mas du Clos circuit though the various pictures and videos from the guys at Track4Fun in Italy. It's a fabulous looking place and no wonder EVO used it to make pretty pictures for their European Car of the Year issue.

I had to laugh when they describe all the cars as having been "quite amazing on the road too.." while showing a Lotus 2Eleven but in any case, enjoy the eye candy.

In case you are wondering...

...why it is that we have not posted much Axis generated material lately. Well, here's the thing, when you drive street cars at the track often....they break, and at the moment most of our cars are just that, busted!

The Mcoupe has a bad clutch and in need of some buffing, the Spec Boxster has a bad cam position sensor, the M3 and Exige S have some overheating issues... think the Spec e30 is also getting some work done. As fas as I know the EVO and the 997 are the only cars that is running properly at the moment and that's probably only because they are not used as often! Of course we probably all need newbrake pads and tires...

No worries we are working on the "fleet" and we'll be back in action ASAP!.

Axis trophies at TireRack National tour

Our own Mr. Vishnu Evo Adil staged a nice comeback on the second day of the Tire Rack SCCA NAtional Tour in Devens MA. Adil was running his Evo IX in Street Touring Unlimited.

Great performances by John Winchester and the fastest man you can lend your car to: Mr. GJ Dixon who in Chris Travis's Street Mod Civic went faster than "the Alien" himself, Mark Daddio by a huge 4/10ths Sunday almost making up his deficit from the first day. GJ was 2 whole seconds faster than the car owner even if to my knowledge this is his first time in the car! Awesome.



Adil's emails:

Saturday "...STU was rain in the beginning and drying out later. Ideal for evo but I could not fnd good setup. Corey 1st with 61.7, dan 2n4 63.3 nd me 3rd wth 64.3.
Notable event was John Winchester running his BSP Evo beating Daddio's SM EVO by 0.3 second. Daddio was shocked!"

Sunday "...really interesting event. ... I think STS and FS were faster than STU on Sunday when the whole day was dry and consistent.
The course had only two mild break zones and no straightaways but high speed sweepers and slaloms the whole way. Ultimate cornering grip and gearing was the key. Power did not help as speed was restricted but probably higher than 50 thru the entire thing except for two corners. ...
...The first day every run was on radically different surface...going super wet to almost dry. Had to change shock settings between each run and was on tires, wheels that I never drove efore. Corey was running same and helped.

Sunday had a course element that was amazing..visually and to drive..will have to diagram for u guys "
