Lamborghini Safety Car Fail.
by
AC

Italian GT Championship at Vallelunga. Granted, conditions were horrible but it's at the very least bad form for the safety car, a 4WD Lamborghini Gallardo to spin!
How bad was it? check out the highlight video after the break
(Via Michela Cerruti who was driving the white BMW Z4 GT3 you see caught out in the highlight clip)

Meanwhile at Spa...

the 2012 Total 24 Hours of Spa turned into a motorboat race for a while, whith predictable results...
Mclaren is making a big push in GT3 customer racing with two cars in the PRO category and seven in Pro-AM.
Oh and note to self, don't touch the inside curb between Eau Rouge and Radillion!

In the end, Audi won another endurance race, congratulation.
Looks like the race was a major apocalypse for Mclaren. Maybe Leo Parente messed with their buttons!...

Pit Entry FAIL

The Blancpain-Ritter Lamborghini Gallardo driven by Nikolaus Mayr-Melnhof fails spectacularly at making the turn into pit lane during this year's 24 hours of Spa.

FIA GT3 is great!

Check out this segment from the FIA GT race at the newly renovated Silverstone.
While GT1 seems to have evolved into a bit of a heavy handed clown show, FIA GT3 looks to have its mix just right with Ferrari, Mercedes, Audi and BMW fighting tooth an nail along with Astons, Fords, Porsches and Lamborghinis. What a series!

A heady time in FIA GT racing, that moment when a production car derived series peaked, completely out of control.
How fabulous, Mercedes CLK-GTR vs Porsche GT1 vs Mclaren F1 GTR. Excess at its best.
Of those crazy machines, two famously flipped (one with Mark Webber), one never did. Which was your favorite?
Edit: Colin correctly points out it was not the MB CLK-gtr that flipped at LeMans but its successor, the CLR...

Porsche wins the 24 Hour of Spa
by

BMS Scuderia Italia, a team perhaps better know for running Ferraris in the past was the winner of the 2010 24 hours of Spa. Heartbreak for BMW who led for the over 23 hours with the three Dirk car of Müller, Werner and Adorf when a halfshaft failure forced the car first off road and then into the pits for repair and to third place on the podium.

BMW M3 at the 24 hours of Spa
by
AC
1 comment:
Qualifying for the 2010 Total 24 Hours of Spa just ended, It will be Ferrari, BMW, Audi in the top three grid spots.
Curiously each manufacturer is in a good position to claim a class win: Ferrari is in GT2, Audi in GT3 and BMW runs in GTN which is for non FIA homologated cars.
What? Yes the M3 was homologated GT2 for LeMans under ACO rules and GT under ALMS rules but to run in FIA GT2 the team would need to run Michelin tires. Dunlop being a BMW technical partner there is a conflict and hence the GTN class.
You can download the qualifying results --->HERE

the Snoras Spyker Squadron sent us, and you my fellow tracktards, a nice postcard from this past week end's 1000km of Spa, the final preparation for Le Mans.
The first video has a turn by turn drive through of the glorious track. After the jump a more general piece, don't miss the Spyker Girls!

So what if it's RWD and has a 5.6 liter V8 rather than a turbo V6 and 4wd, at least the tail lights are stock!
And here is the rest of it.

Axis style socialism

Recently Axis proposed following Portugal's lead and spending public money to create fantastic world class racing facilities (read about it HERE). Hey, why not, better than new bridges to nowhere, right?
In Argentina they are way, way ahead. The Circuito Potrero de los Funes was financed as a public work by the government. Of course it did not hurt that ex Formula 1 driver Carlos Reutemann was a provincial governor and is now running for president of the country.
Write your congressmen now!
(thanks CG)

Alpina B6 S for Fia GT3, need a job?
by
AC
1 comment:

Needs a bigger wing, right?
Turns out Alpina Racing is hiring, week end availability a must!
ALPINA look back on a long and successful history in international motorsport.
Well-known F1 and Touring Car drivers such as Niki Lauda, Jacky Ickx, Hans Stuck and Dieter Quester gripped an ALPINA steering wheel on their way to winning the European Touring Car Championship three times. ALPINA pilots also won the Nürburgring 24 Hours numerous times, as well as the 24 Hours of Spa in 1970.
After 20 years out of racing, ALPINA will celebrate their comeback by fielding a factory team in the 2009FIA GT3 European Championship, as well as competing in important endurance races. In addition to our factory team effort, we will also sell race cars to private parties, collectors and race teams.
So that we may build up our race team and successfully develop the race version of the BMW ALPINA B6 GT3, we’re looking for candidates with experience in motorsport. Your commitment and drive for perfection are the basis for future success. We expect a high level of flexibility, including weekends... Interested? Then compete for one of the following positions:
Project Manager
Automotive Race Engineer – Suspension and Aerodynamic Set-Up- Vehicle engineer: drivetrain and engine bay packaging construction
Automotive Engineer – Development, Chassis/Aerodynamic Panels
Automotive Engineer – Development, Drivetrain/Engine Bay Packaging
Race Mechanic, preferably with Lorry driving Licence
Technician, testing equipment and electronics
Purchasing/Logistics/Quality Control Specialist

I actually have some distant memories of being at Monza as a little boy with my dad and seeing Alpinas race. Coming down to the Parabolica, they looked like spaceships to me. If I remember correctly, it was the CSL's vs Capri's and lots of Alfa GTAm...and the smell of castor oil... great flashback.
