We do wonder what the effect of watching Tommi Mäkinen effortlessly flog this Canadian spec 2015 Subaru WRX STI around Buttonwillow might be on some in Scoobyworld.

"You cannot do any mistakes with this car",  "it really is a car that asks you go faster, go faster"
Clearly a Canadian clip because US lawyers would have been all over that editing room, STAT!

On a tangent, imagine Tommi doing a Christopher Walken imitation...or vice versa?

HD Four Way

Scooby Canada sent up this clip, interesting for a couple of reasons I thought. It's a user selectable multi angle clip, something I had not seen before on YouTube. You can choose a front bumper cam, an over the dash view, a rear side and driver action angle. Pretty cool and all shot in HD.

The other nice bit is that it's a clip of someone doing rally in North America who is not either Travis Pastrana or Ken Block, WIN!

Make sure your wing is screwed on properly...

Just screwing a wing to the trunk lid of your STI and calling it a day can have unintended consequences especially when said STI is good for 150 mph (240 km/h) .

Luckily Element Tuning's cage was built properly and the driver walked away with just a dislocated thumb (notice the broken steering wheel.)

A proposal to make autocross more exciting...

Seriously, people would be lining up to get that "moving cone" work assignment... and that's a way more interesting "Chicago box" than I have ever seen!

Let's face it, autocross is not much of a spectator sport, I can guarantee you that if the SCCA instituted a "moving Segway" cone, TV millions would be pouring in. Imagine: "On this week's course we put a celebrity on a reasonable priced Segway". The possibilities are endless.

This week's Top Gear Moment of Zen

Top Gear tries to determine if there is any difference at all between the Impreza STi vs the Evo X in their own, rigorously scientific way....

Clarkson hated the STi and loved the Evo X but later on the Stig gets the same lap time out of each car. In another unrelated bit of trivia, the Stig communicated that the Mercedes CLK Black is the most entertaining car he has driven in years.

Rally Finland will scare even rally drivers...I think that's saying something.
Commentary is Dutch ( I think...correct me if I'm wrong) but the driver interviews are in English. Here is Mikko Hirvonen on the Ouninpohja stage:

Ever notice the there is a certain look to some rally drivers....kind of a bug eyed quasi psychotic thing going with the eyes... Gilles Panizzi, Hirvonen, and take a look at Petter Solberg...

Could it be that look comes from driving stages the Finns quaintly line with organic, recyclable guard rails? Here is Jan Kopecky in a Skoda.

Technologically speaking, how can the average Hyundai be so much further along than a new $250,000 airplane? It's amazing, FAA-certified piston airplanes DON'T have electronic ignition, fuel injection (even the mechanical type), and DON'T usually come with LED or HID lighting, all standard items on even the most modest of cars.

But the Experimental category rules for light aircraft mean designers are free from dinosaurian constriction, and quite often Experimental builders head straight for the car world to find the most effective solutions for their flying machines.

Case in Point:
Today at AirVenture we looked at the new Super Sport gyrocopter prototype from Sportcopter in Utah.
First off, the designers went out of their way to secure real Ferrari F60 Enzo red paint for the SS (they told me it "wasn't easy"). Beyond that, this thing looks nothing like a prototype! As with the exterior, the interior is fully detailed, with inertial-reel seatbelts, tan leather upholstery, and perfectly fit instrumentation pods. The adjustable pedals are works of CNC art! The instrument panel and interior are lighted exclusively with LED technology, and dual HID landing lights can be installed if the builder prefers. Automotive racing coilsprings (with "dual rates") adorn the landing legs which contain cartridge struts like a nice German sedan, and urethane bushings control the racy lower A-arms, specially designed to maintain geometry throughout the range of travel (sound familiar?). A badass Ducati-style disc brake is used to slow the aluminum rotor after landing and the stainless steel brake lines appear to have been borrowed from a nearby SCCA paddock.

The kicker? The 100mph Super Sport is related to our own Adil in that it runs on a 190bhp Subaru 2.5L water cooled boxer engine. This readily-available, torquey, and reliable powerplant is the perfect dynamo to power this application, and the acquisition cost amounts to a fraction of a new aviation engine.

All-in, the Super Sport kit should run about $85,000 with the Subaru engine.

A different look at WRC

WRC is sadly not shown anymore on US television. I suppose the main issue is that it's almost impossible to show and to narrate it compellingly. We've all seen the bits of onboard, the spectacular slides, the terrifying crashes but it's hard for a new fan to get into the intricacies of the sport as it is usually shown on television.
But check this out, I came across this fantastically well done new series shown on Discovery UK called "Engineering the World Rally".
It is an in depth and more three dimensional look at what it takes to run these amazing cars in these gruelling races. This first episode is on the season opener, the Rally of Montecarlo and follows the Subaru team of Solberg and Atkinson. It is long, 44 minutes but well worth watching so sit back and relax. I hope Discovery will show this series here in the US at some point.

Subaru Asshattery

A word for the many readers visiting from the various Scoob forums: Welcome! I read your posts and I just wanted to clear the air with a few cold hard facts.

1. This was a track day where point bys WERE required (even in this the advanced group that somehow mr. Von Asshat got admission to). Some track days do not require points, this one did.
2. The Miata never gave the guy a point, when he moves in on the kink it is because, if you are not letting someone by that is the normal line before "No Name Straight" at Lime Rock. Should he have? maybe, but he did not. (he was just coming out of the pits).
3. Mr. Von Asshat seemed to be one of those drivers that drives fast only on the straights (using that awesome turbo torque). You can see how fast I close on him before he "wakes up". I don't think he hit an apex all day. He did almost hit a couple of cars though.

What is it about 4wd turbo cars that bring out the finest in its drivers? The fellow in the Blue scooby is the original track day assclown: on a single day at Lime Rock he almost took out 3 cars trying to outbrake them on the inside of Big Bend during the first hot lap, later almost shoved another car off the track trying to divebomb on the Downhill turn and later this lovely move.

As the clip starts I come up on him trundling along at Big Bend. As soon as he sees me, Mr.Scooby Von Asshat wakes up and steps on it...too bad he has a Miata in the way....Oh well no matter, I have a rally car I'll just pass him on the grass!

the kicker is that looking around the internet I came upon a video of the same incident from the Miata's point of view! how cool is that? It does not look so dramatic but you can see the driver shaking his head in awe of Scooby Von Asshat mad Skillz in the fine art of being a retard! :o)
And yeah...he got himself kicked out of the event...
