Time waster...

Is a minute and a half of classic rally cars in slow motion wasted time?....I guess it's all relative.

Super Slo-Mo is the new Rs Orange

4 comments:
We've featured super slo motion clips for quite a while, it's fun to see that they have become so popular that they are now part of the language, so to speak. The best moments of this BMW clip are that smoking rear wheel and the bug flying up in front of the rushing M3 GTS. Both moments you will recognize from past clips, the first a Mclaren rear wheel and the second from this year's Isle of Man TT highlights.

Speaking of the M3 GTS with all the articles written about it, not one that I have seen seemed to focus on what might be the main reason BMW went ahead with this project. Sure it's painted RS Orange (or maybe it's Inka Orange) with black accents, a traditional GT3 RS combo (curiously not offered in this latest version of the RS) and it's no coincidence it's called a GTS rather than the more traditional CSL. Sure it's a great halo car but the most important feature must surely be the homologation of a 4.4 liter engine for use in competition. Displacement makes torque, even with restrictors...

Super Slo-Mo and Hamilton's Secret.

13 comments:
There were some fantastic Hyper Slow Motion shots on today's Friday practice broadcast. At 1500 frames per second you can really see all the forces on the cars as they slam over curbs.

Lewis Hamilton topped practice today with Vettel nipping at his heels. Vettel was consistently faster in sectors 1 and 2 but he could not touch Hamilton in sector 3. This revealing superimposed shot shows precisely where Vettel lost time. In the final chicane at the end of the lap, Hamilton brakes earlier than Vettel and sets up the exit to the chicane much better.

Braking earlier might not pay during a race when you have someone at your heels trying to pass but in a qualifying or Time Trial situation, where placing the car on the perfect line is the key, it can pay off quite handsomely!

The Doctor and the T.T.

The Tourist Trophy is taking place this week and Valentino Rossi made an appearance on the Isle of Man with Giacomo Agostini to take in the scene, wave at the crowds and, probably, sell a few Yamahas.

A 34 mile lap makes the Nürburgring seem like a go kart track. That there are people willing to ride at speed on a track where the guard rails are made of trees, rocks and cattle wire is something I will never understand but will always be in awe of.

And here is the rest of it.
