A1 Ring reborn as the Red Bull Ring

A1-Ring261008

One of the great european tracks which had fallen into hard times is back after a make over courtesy of Red Bull. The A1 ring in Spielberg, Austria used to be called the Österreichring and or Zeltweg and hosted Formula 1 Grand Prixs in different configurations from 1970 to 1987 and then from 1997 to 2003.

Yesterday was the official opening with the complete Red Bull motorsport linup along with Bernie Ecclestone, Austrian drivers Niki Lauda, Gerhard Berger and Helmut Marko. Of course Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber were there along with all kinds of Red Bull sponsored vehicles, from Formula 1 to a P-38 Lightning.

B-roll from the RB is worth a look, especially the wet racing between the SLS and the Z4...

  1. I'm so glad it's finally open again. I went up there a lot when the project was on hold. It really made me sad seeing it in that kind of disrepair. It's all about stupid political/environmental crap in Austria. If Mateschitz wasn't so thick headed, i'm sure it would've died a long time ago.

Seems like they got the go-kart/Supermoto track as well as Offroad section up as well. Still, kind of sucks that they aren't utilising the entire track. I walked the old part last year and wow, i can't imagine the rush you would get going foot down over the brow of the hill in an old F1 car.

Thanks for posting. Always great to see such enthusiasm. When are you guys heading over there for a few trackdays? :)
