12 Minutes of Badass Racing



The 2010 Gold Coast V8 Supercars race started with guest driver Jacques Villeneuve setting what may be a new record, hitting five cars in one accident!

It may have started with a clown show but it had a sublime ending: 12 minutes of some of the best tin top action you can imagine on this fiendishly difficult track between veteran Jamie Whincup and rookie Shane Van Gisbergen. The ending, I won't give it away but I'm sure will spark some discussion in the comments.

  1. Honestly, I don't get the way people race in USA. Bumping, rather strange car setup (clearly visible in turns), anarchic rules... It reminds me of some sort of redneck racing, IMHO.

  3. @AC: Sorry, it was a typo, was thinking about how their racing style reminds me of the one seen in USA. Regarding the WTCC - rules in WTCC do not allow drivers to behave so badly as seen in the second clip, do they?

  5. Well, first of all this cars are great, fuck those WTCC tin cans.

    Anyway, I still struggle to realize why it's so difficult to see a clear pass in Saloon racing. Everytime it's bump here and there, trying to push the other off line.

    It's an undeniable show, but I still prefer single-seaters...

  6. That's what production-based racing is about WTCC and BTCC have tons of bumping around and that makes it exciting. I've fallen asleep attempting to watch NASCAR.

  8. Living in Australia and suffering through many tedious, dull, energy sapping processions called the V8 Supercar Series this race was absolutely fantastic. The little taps and bumps are part of tintop racing. In many ways they make it racing. Unwritten rules are simple, turn someone around get a penalty. Of course the lead car can be as tactical as the following car by holding up at the apex, getting a little nudge so the following car loses momentum, then the lead car pull away down the straight.

    This meeting at Bathurst save the V8 series from a year of tedium each and every year.

  10. The first lap was an absolute disgrace. Put a bunch of guys who have never raced a V8 Supercar on the least forgiving circuit on the calendar, and then expect good racing. I don't think so.

  11. Can't believe Whincup got away with that. Being passed and allowed to both jump the chicane and take the lead back at the same time. Entry should be equal to exit; not exit last corner should be equal to exit in these cases, assuming that the lead in the first corner is not obtained by deliberate late braking to give a nudge. Also, Whincup tabbed Van Grisbergen twice while missing the chicane; both hits making no sense to the actual chicane.

    If I were Van Gisbergen, I would torpedo him the rest of the season and the next just for fun. I guess that's why I am not a racing driver, but a spectator. Great driving, though.
