Just a Friday afternoon, ripping on a GT2.

2 comments:
CG and Stee managed to sneak up to Monticello Motor Club last friday for a little test and tune on their race cars. They managed to break both (hey, that what test sessions are for, right?) but that only meant it was an excuse to rip on CG's GT2 on the North course!.

CG:

We had a fun day yesterday at Monticello. What a great handling track.... I love the facility.

We even manage to sneak in a few laps in the members only track in the GT2 thanks to the power steering of my Cayman racecar (yet again failing through another hose...). Check below the first couple of laps with Stee on board.

The OEM tires are the worst R-comps ever, especially the fronts (a howling herd of 25 cats).Beyond 9/10ths it understeers like a pig on slow corners (70mph or less). Nevertheless, it's a ton of fun and brutal power with a playful rear end. Also the speed is deceiving in that car, consider that 2nd is good for 80, and 3rd for 112, and it doesn't really come across in the video (we didn't know the new Chasecam had accelerometers we just threw the PDR on the floor so not sure if what shows in the video is meaningful at all)..

Porsches in the dirt.

3 comments:
It snowed here in NYC yesterday and while it seems these days most people are terrified by any hint of sliding, I immediately took my car out and relished any amount of slow speed sideways action I could manage... It was great fun and a rare treat while it lasted.

Speaking of driving on loose stuff please take a look at this great little film by photographer/racer Jeff Zwart, author of the highly collectible book Porsche Rennsport.

I'm not really down with the conclusion but right up to the GT2 driving up Pike's Peak, it's brilliant.

As a bonus and for sideways inspiration, find a collection of classic Pike's Peak videos after the jump!

The truth about the Nissan GT-R

10 comments:
I hope you have read Drivers Republic latest "issue".  They got to do the comparison we all would like to do and concluded that, essentially, Porsche was right when they claimed something was odd about Nissan's Nürburgring lap times. Chris Harris is a good driver, probably better than most auto journalists so his impressions have more weight with us.  When he says there may have been 15 seconds more in the GT-R but certainly not 30,  it's believable.

Of course the counter argument will be that the condition for the Nissan driver's run were different, it was much warmer, it was dryer, better driver etcetera  so,  I imagine this will not put anything to rest.

Axis recommends you read the article and while you are at it subscribe to Drivers Republic.
Here is the GT2 lap,  the GT-R's lap is after the jump.

The best lap CG never did at VIR: Porsche 997 GT2 2:06

3 comments:
CG was at VIR yesterday and set us this video illustrating Traqmate Studio's "Theoretical Best Lap" feature. The software will take the video from your session's best segments and paste them together. (which is why you see cars appear and disappear!)

You are riding in a Porsche 997 GT2 and CG reported the track was very cold and grip was marginal. He also is not a fan of the OEM version of the Michelin Pilot Cup tires. The car still needs sorting as it understeers too much in the slower turns. However power is certainly is not lacking when he can put it down, I see a 156 mph (251km/h) on the main straight. That's about 20 mph faster than Stee's old e46 M3. His actual times Friday were in the 2:07 range.

Below is a graph comparing speeds between different cars and track days at VIR:

Red and Blue: CG GT2 (2:07s)

Black: Matt Becker (Lotus test driver/engineer) in CG's Exige S 2:11.9

Green: CG Exige S 2:13

Cyan: Stee M3 2:17

As CG commented (having been in the car with him) Becker is still the king of the "esses" his speed through that tricky section is just phenomenal.

Now let's add two turbos to that: Porsche GT2 track video.

10 comments:
You have enjoyed Zampa's Porsche 996 GT3 video below, now let's switch to the next generation of flattened VW Beetle, the 997.

Same track, Imola and we ride this time with Manuma in his Porsche 997 GT2. This is the same car our own CG has and aside from massively more power, the 997 has a better suspension setup (stock) and is easier to drive at the limit than the 996.

We are not sure what if any modifications this GT2 has or if it's been aligned any particular way, we do know it is wearing Pirelli Corsa.

The GT2 is a massive 7 to 8 seconds faster on this track than the 996 GT3 and it does it with a lot less drama. Most of the advantage comes on the straights with the big turbo just destroying the GT3 on the uphill sections. If you are familiar with the corners at Imola, the 996 can just about hang to Tosa but on the run up to Piratella and later from Acque Minerali to the Variante Alta...well it's all over, ciao!

The 997 seems to be more balanced mid corner with possibly a touch of understeer.

In the video below I have combined the two laps. After the jump, you can see the original GT2 video, three laps of which the first is the fastest and well, it gets more sideways and hooliganistic from there. Again, nice car control from our Italian tracktard friends!

Tomorrow we switch to a red car on the same track...

Nissan GT-R and Porsche GT2 vs the Axis STFU3000

25 comments:
We've all marveled at the reported performance of the Nissan GT-R, many wondered if such performance is even physically possible. Porsche for the first time ever weighed in, magazines raved, web sites castigated, video evidence has been questioned. In other words, there has been much entertainment for tracktard gearheads.

Now, call us cynical skeptics, but so far we have not seen evidence that satisfies us one way or the other about the GT-R and other cars it has been compared to. "Godzilla the Giantkiller"is just too good a magazine selling headline not to be taken with a grain of salt. There have been many tests but none have had the level of detail or transparency to convince us fully.

So here is what we propose: Axis of Oversteer will supply a Porsche GT2 and we make an open call to curious owners of a Nissan GT-R to provide Godzilla for head-to-head testing.

Let's get something out of the way: I've read comments about Axis being a Porsche fanboy site. I can assure you we have no vested interest in Porsche A.G. Of course we LIKE Porsches, what true car maniac does not but our main interest is performance. CG owns a GT2 it's true, but I guarantee that is only because he could not find a 430 Scuderia at a premium that would not include the removal of precious body parts. We drive BMW and Audi, I even have a soft spot for Renaults when I go to Europe! We get into arguments with people all the time because we call for the death of the stick-shift and proclaim the virtues of paddle-shifters (though, ironically, at the moment none of us owns a car with a robo-box!). In other words we are interested in how to go fast not in what to go fast in.

I can guarantee we don't care what the results will be but we DO CARE how conclusions are reached and how data is gathered.

So how would this work? Obviously this would be in consultation with with the GT-R owner but the main goal is to eliminate as many variables as possible.

Here are the basic points:

  1. Cars will be tested on the same day, under the same conditions.
  2. Cars should be stock (disclaimer: CG installed rear seats in his GT2).
  3. Both cars will carry data loggers and video cameras.
  4. All results will be made available on our site.
  5. We are based in NYC so testing would be at one of our local tracks, to be determined.

Here are the safety/insurance points:

  • A fair test requires the same driver in both cars, ideally a number of different drivers in both cars and we understand that this might be a sticking point. While we welcome support from track insurance companies that may want to be involved in this project and allow for a more complete test, CG is willing to guarantee the GT-R owner MSRP as a contingency. CG would drive and the GT-R owner would ride in both cars to even things out. If someone can guarantee for the GT2 then we can have a further data point.
  • There has been some controversy about the GT-R warranty, we would run the GT-R in whatever mode the owner is satisfied will not void Nissan's coverage.

Again, in the interest of full disclosure, while CG can play the part of the Stig's latin cousin very well, he is in fact the head of a successful company and happily married with 3 kids....you would not be putting your life in the hands of a Red Bull fueled Gran Turismo 5 champion.

We would like to thank Chris H for his help formulating this idea and look forward to getting to the bottom of this, we truly are curious and want to find out what we can.

Join us, we'll gather data, feed it into the nearly infallible Axis STFU3000 Supercomputer and let the chip fall where they may!

Feel free to leave comments with your suggestions and if you are that GT-R owner CONTACT US asap!

GT2 Monster

9 comments:

It's here... come take a quick look....

CG's latest toy was finally ready to be picked up yesterday. It had been shipped from the dealer directly to Farnbacher-Loles for alignment and the installation of a few suspension bits. It will also be getting rear seat installed as this has to be sensible family transportation after all!

Awesome in white, the car is all wings and angles and bulges (hence the cubist photos on the intro). I would say the only disappointment is that it does not come with an inflatable Walter Röhrl instructor in the boot. Even on the careful drive home, a quick comparison between the GT2 and the not exactly slow 997S illustrated perfectly the difference between a great car and a SUPERCAR.

I seriously doubt CG will not succumb to temptation so you might see him and the GT2 tomorrow at the PDA/NASA Pocono track day. Catch him if you can and come back to Axis of Oversteer for future updates and videos!

Autocar compared the 997 GT3 with the C6-Z06. While the Corvette is about half the price, their power to weight ratios are closer than you might think. Stee, who is good with numbers, figures it something like this:

Porsche 997 Gt2
530 hp at the crank, 15% loss so 450hp at the wheels.
3175lbs curb weight +200lbs driver equals 3375lbs /450 = 7.5 to 1

Corvette Z06
505 hp at the crank, 17% loss makes for 420hp on the ground.
3132lbs curb + our driver 3332lbs/420= 7.9 to 1

That does not immediately explain the video.
