Teams are keeping revs under 12000 rpm
The 15000 rpm limit imposed by regulations this year is just theoretical, most teams in FP2 never wound their "Power Units" much past 11,500 rpm. The need for fuel savings and reliability coupled with the amount of torque from the turbo and the electric components make squeezing every last rev pointless.
That's a shame.

Well, it is what it is. Its amazing how much slower the cars look even from the overhead camera position. That little left-right kink at 2:10, looks really slow compared to previous years. At least the drivers are still getting a little bit of good tunnel-vision heading down the straight portions. Its a little ingenious marketing idea by IWC that Hamilton's racing glove, I think it's Hamilton, actually has a watch drawn onto his left racing glove. But, it is good that the season is underway, and the Australians always do a splendid job and really know how to put on a proper Grand Prix!!!
ReplyDeleteThis kind of system development is exactly what F1 should be known for from here on out. Its why the new rules are so exciting, there are so many ways to gain efficiency and/or speed. It also gives me hope since the manufacturers have an advantage when it comes to programming the systems involved, whereas RBR may not have the depth of resources in this area compared to Mclaren or Mercedes, obvs. We might see actual racing again for the first part of the season.
ReplyDeleteMy alarms are set, there is double-smoked bacon and beer in the fridge, and I'm waiting for the practice sessions to download.
The more exposure we're getting to these new engines, the less I like them. You can't even hear them on the TV.
ReplyDeleteThat means they should turn the F1 feed volume up to compensate. The plus also means hearing the crowd/atmosphere better
ReplyDeleteWe'll have to see how the reliability goes and see which teams want to up the revs when needed (gaining podiums or at the "double points" races). Interesting season coming our way, that's for sure.
