The new sounds of F1: give them your grades

Bernie does not like them and he's not alone, there is a big collective meh from fans across the world.

Of course there were some of same complaints when V12 and V10 got canned but the move to turbos and, more crucially the low,  close to road car low, redlines is what drastically changes the sound.

While the new engines can rev up to 15000 rpm,  the realities of torque curves and fuel regulations mean there will be little reason for engines to go much above 10000 rpm.   A modern F1 car revving just 1000 rpm faster than your cousin's old Honda S2000 will only excite those who like turbo induction sounds.

But, on the other hand, fans have been clamoring for more variety and the new rules certainly have given us that.   Have a listen to the clip below and tell us what you think of the different sounds.

    I'm just not sure that Formula 1 sounds that inspiring anymore. The new noses ruin the look, and the new engines just aren't....thrilling sounding.

  2. went to a race last year. To be honest i don't see what the fuss is all about sound pretty good (Ferrari didn't sound t0o clever). Might change my opinion when i hear them in the flesh, I don't think you can ever get the real affect from a recording. My main concern was they would be muffled by the turbo but it appears not.

    Great to hear some proper pop, crackle and warble, plus the whine of a turbo. Sound like real cars :-)

  7. I think they sound fantastic. I also think the cars are nowhere near where they will be in a few weeks, or months, or god-forbid give them a full season to actually work through the program. Ofcourse the other option is to Knee-Jerk react like NASCAR/IMSA/GRAND-AM-blahblahblah officials and throw the whole thing out the window.

    You can't make everyone happy, and most people don't ever like new things. They always think the old stuff was the best. Stop being old and grumpy.

  8. These new engines, along with the new design, and the new double points rule are truly deplorable. The new engines are an embarrassment to automotive and mechanical engineering and they are clearly designed to stifle the abilities of engineers to create the most powerful and most efficient engines ever produced. We need to give engineers the freedom to reach their potential. F1 needs to go back to the good old fashioned V10's/V12's. The reason why Bernie doesn't like the new sound is because Bernie knows that all the folks who went to F1 races around the world last year, when they compare to this years engine note....they ain't gonna cough up the dough to go to races in 2014 or 2015. The first GP I attended was Montreal '93. Younger F1 fans of today don't realize, they cant even begin to imagine what it was like to hear an entire grid of F1 cars back in the early 90's. It was like listening to the most beautiful women in the world have a geargasm for a continuous ninety minutes. It was power! I'm not against car companies coming up with more fuel efficient environmental friendly engines. Just don't do it at the expense of the greatest sport in the history of competition. If Senna were still with us today he'd find the guys responsible for all this BS, he'd walk up to them and Eddie Irvine them and popem' right in the chops!!!!!!! And then he'd run over them in his McLaren MP4/6!!!!

  10. Any move away from aero to mechanical importance is going to be good for leveling the field which will in turn lead to an entertaining season. Let's give it a chance.

  11. Too many complaints for the sake of complaining. They sound like petrol motors and they go fast, that's enough to get me excited.


    Interesting how the Ferrari seems to have devised a way to sync the gears on downshifts without having to waste fuel blipping the throttle.

  12. While it's not the whine of 19k RPMS, the more I listen, the more I like it. I, for one, am looking forward to the upcoming season.

  13. Renault is frakked this season! My ex-bf drove for STR and is w/ RBR now, and says that all-inclusive, it's going to take Renault 20wks to solve the problems w/ their power unit and manufacture new components sufficient to outfit all of their customer teams.


    Meanwhile, Williams is loving having switched to Merc. engines this year! I hate 'em! :(

  15. Aren't they somewhat reminiscent of the v6 engines from the 80s? I enjoy the new tone, but if they truly aren't reving to their limit, then that's a bit depressing...

  16. Old fashioned v10s/12s? You mean V8s, Flat 8s, V6 turbos, i4 turbos and so on?

    60s-70s were a veritable circus of engine variations and configurations, and the insane turbo 80s are not to be missed.

    You're getting caught up in nostalgia that shouldn't be there champ.
