A Racer Is Always Thinking

Let's ride with Dion Von Moltke at Mazda Raceway-Laguna Seca as he narrates a practice lap before the ALMS race last week.  On this occasion Dion was driving the Flying Lizards GTC Porsche 911.

One quality differentiating a great driver from merely a good one is the ability to understand car behavior and articulate it to their engineers so setup can be optimized.

What Dion is doing in this clip, talking through his own lap, is a very good exercise for anyone racing or even just tracking as it forces you to be conscious of your choices, try it sometimes.

  1. Interesting. The video of Senna going around Suzuka in an NSX is pretty nice as well. There's no Senna driver technique commentary, but the close up of his driving slippies show how he really peppers the throttle thru the turns throughout the circuit. He's driving the NSX, but I wonder if he used the same technique for his karting and F1 cars. I bet so.

Is this still as important in the age of data logging? One would think that data somewhat diminishes the importance of a driver having to relay feedback and information back to the engineer because the data already reveals so much.
