I too am surprised about the helmet. I would think he'd return the German national flag coloured version of his MBZ years. Perhaps his personal brand consultant advised him otherwise... LOL
After seeing the helmet in person at the Supernats a few months ago, I can tell you that it is much more orange than red. It did have a Ferrari logo on it though.

Certainly a more Mercedes friendly crash helmet is in the works.. testing is just testing.
