After getting burned on the trading desk, a sub-7 lap at the Ring is just what the doctor ordered. Awesome stuff. The airbox resonance gives me goose bumps!
Just a question (not at ALL a criticism) for you guys who know the ring. In this video and other ring vids I've noticed that in the carousel(3) (at about 4:36") most drivers are at maintenance throttle/holding speed & not really back on power until the exit. It would seem that with the negative camber of the track there to help that they could be accellerating through the corner. Can anybody edumacate me on this - just curious?
It's VERY bumpy. (and surprisingly steep too) It's not like a smooth transition (like a skateboard ramp) its a gutter then a definete kick. So you tend to drive round 2 wheels virtually in the gutter which means the cars loaded unevenly. Also that last bit where the cars "pop out" before turning right, has a very pronounced crown, leading to unsettling of the car. People have come to grief there in the past carrying too much speed.
Various circuit guides all seem to gravitate towards the same comments. It's not a corner you make time in.
Great overhead cam and scenery on the track. Beautiful driving, perfecting sweeping into every apex.
In regards to the previous comment about the Karaussell turn at 4:36, it is very bumpy like the previous posted mentioned, however it's the exit that really disturbs the balance of the car. If you've played your fair share of sim-driving games throughout the years you would have probably driving through that very turn multiple times. Now, a video game is obviously not completely accurate of a track's layout/feel but it's as good as it gets from driving on the real thing (not to mention racing games today pay some serious attention to track details).
My point in mentioning this is that I have gone through that turn and when the camber begins to level out there is somewhat of a crest at the exit. You got your car trying to correct itself from the heavy camber just so it can meet a small crest then followed by a sweeping right (all with a very bumpy turn surface causing your tires to bump off the asphalt). The turn is terrible, you're just fighting the car the whole time.
Like the poster said, it's not a corner you make time in, just make sure you get through it safetly.
Brother, nothing needs to warm up. Just go out and put your foot down till you hit a buck 50 on the straight. Everything would be good.
ReplyDeleteHaha.. Insane. How many days after the gumpert record? Shame that the dude in the gumpert have to scrape the "record" off
ReplyDeleteWell, I think when Radical builds a coupe you can drive without a helet and in the rain....maybe

ReplyDeleteIt's still as valid as the Gumpert IMO. Cost is nowhere near as much too.
ReplyDeleteUsing the official lap (start at the END of the pits - Finish on the corner onto the pit straight) I make it 6:48
ReplyDeleteAnd there's a fair few "moments" in there that Phil Bennett (IIRC) could extract more time from!
Great Vid. Thanks for posting
All a days work in jeans and a t-shirt? I need to find a new job...preferably that one!
ReplyDeleteIs he really wearing a T-shirt? I thought I saw some skin.
ReplyDeleteYup, he would never be allowed to to a DE with the BMW club :)
ReplyDeleteThey drove the car all the way from Radical HQ too apparently.
ReplyDeleteReally scary how the car jumps sideway every time he touches a kerb! Just amazing stuff...
