Super Slo-Mo and Hamilton's Secret.

There were some fantastic Hyper Slow Motion shots on today's Friday practice broadcast. At 1500 frames per second you can really see all the forces on the cars as they slam over curbs.

Lewis Hamilton topped practice today with Vettel nipping at his heels. Vettel was consistently faster in sectors 1 and 2 but he could not touch Hamilton in sector 3. This revealing superimposed shot shows precisely where Vettel lost time. In the final chicane at the end of the lap, Hamilton brakes earlier than Vettel and sets up the exit to the chicane much better.

Braking earlier might not pay during a race when you have someone at your heels trying to pass but in a qualifying or Time Trial situation, where placing the car on the perfect line is the key, it can pay off quite handsomely!

And here is the rest of it.

  1. They should have all F1 races filmed like that. Only like that.

  2. The line comparissons are the best thing they've come up with in a long time during a broadcast. Too bad they don't use it often enough.

  9. Fail? you are complaining about hotlinking to content that you dont own the copyright on and arn't licensed to use. I'd take the post down before Ecclestone/Mosley come knocking on your door with a tank

  10. Actually, I'm an autoblog subscriber, and now I'm an axis of oversteer subscriber as well. I like your content. Sorry for the bandwidth hit from autoblog AC, but happy it was resolved and I've found another automotive source with good content.

  11. Are people seriously complaining about other people reading a blog that they read?

  12. This comparo is a bit misleading, Hamilton is straightening out the chicane out more as well, but at the sametime hitting the curbs harder and putting more stress into the car, probly ok for qualy, but not good for the race.

Also Vettle seemed to be struggling alot in the last corner, coca-cola. More sector 3 time made up by Hamilton there too.

  13. Wow! The super slow motion shows just how much “wobbling” in the aerodynamics and the slip on the tire traction…. Amazing and you can imagine the improvements that can/will be made in the next decade to get that sorted out (wind tunnel designs that simulate lateral movement perhaps… hey maybe I should move into F1 design!.. perhaps not..)

The overlay images are great, I have seen these before on the European (not Speed TV or FOX which we have here in the USA) coverage of the F1 races, this shows the driver styles but also how late braking can cause the car to go too deep past the apex, which is precisely what happens to Vettel, he loses momentum coming out of the slower corners and chicanes... he will still be F1 champion one day
