Very creepy and the latest news give Felipe Massa as "stable" but that does not mean OK, for one thing Stefano Domenicali confirmed that a he was intubated and that he will not be racing on Sunday.
The video shows Massa was hit by debris which looks very much like a spring. Rubens Barrichello's Brawn had lost a spring on the track ahead of the Ferrari though how it could have still been bouncing around is quite puzzling.
I would be remiss not to point out that medical help took over a minute to arrive and that nobody even remotely equipped with fire gear is close to the car for some 40 seconds. In fact I don't see any fire extinguishers in anyone's hands.
Server getting hit hard...maybe wait for it to load before hitting play, thanks for your patience. There are multi language YouTube versions after the jump if needed...(as long as they last..)

It seems they feared the first fatality on F1 of this century. The whole thing was bizarre but maybe that's because everything happened so quickly.
ReplyDeleteThe video gets to about 55 seconds and stops working.
ReplyDeleteThis is a really weird incedent, one in a million chance that a 4" by 1" metal spring could bouce down the track and strike you in the head.
It does stop at 55, but just move the bar a little and it continues.
ReplyDeleteGreat work on the zoom, AC!
While intubated doesn't sound good, watching him move both arms when moved out of the ambulance is really good news. I think he blacked out as soon as he got hit; just watch the grip on the steering wheel change. The right hand even slides off before the shunt.
What I don' understand is how he managed to brake, although he managed to keep the throtle fully open too...
I just have to say this is amazing after what happened to Surtees last weekend...
Hope everything works out well for Felipe!
working on better video
ReplyDeleteOK Should be better now, the zoom was done by Premiere.
ReplyDeletethe trottle as you will hear from the audio is only wide open AFTER the crash, probably jammed
ReplyDeleteLocal broadcast showed throttle and brake bars at first, both were 100% from the hit on.
ReplyDeleteHow do you figure that string was still bouncing in the air?
ReplyDeleteHope you ( Massa ) still ok,..

This video is getting A LOT of traffic, the Hamsters in my server are working overtime, bare with me as I whip them into shape!
ReplyDeleteThere were several downshifts and he clearly tried to brake. You can even see skid marks. I don't think he had full consciousness though, but his brain and body still seemed to know the motions of what to do. Damn those cockpits are built tough, thankfully. Hopefully everything will be alright.
ReplyDeleteAs mentioned, how could that spring still be in the air? There was no other vehicle to be seen ahead on the track in any frame of the video.
ReplyDeleteThis makes no sense.
A lot of folks are wondering how come the spring could still be bouncing around. It could have come off Ruebens car, laid on the track, and then been driven over later by another driver. It wouldnt have had to still be bouncing from when it came of Barrichello's Brawn.
ReplyDeleteYou can actually see the fire extinguisher on one of the videos you have posted about the aftermath of the accident.
ReplyDeleteAlso I remember lot slower medical helps for accidents. All in all, I dont think there was any delay in giving Massa professional help.
I think it will be at leat another 48 hours before we will know anything sure about his condition, skull fractures are always like that :(
Senna was moving around in the car after his fatal accident at Imola 15 years ago. He waved to the crowd or at least moved his arm from the stretcher. Brain trauma and swelling killed him. Hans device is improvement but when you decell from 180 to zero rapidly it is hard to not sustain brain injury. God speed to Massa, I hope that he recovers completely.
ReplyDeleteTHIS IS A TIME TO CHANGE THE DESIGN OF F1 CARS AND PROTECT MORE THE DRIVER...THE F1 CARS HAVE NOT PROTECTION AT ALL FOR THE DRIVERS IN CASE OF A METAL PIECE LIKE THIS ONE JUMP OUT FROM THE FRONT CAR...THEY JUST HAVE THE HELMET...A LOT TO DO ON THE DESIGN OF F1 CARS...IM GETTING BORED, SORRY GUYS
ReplyDeletemore design on those cars and more protection
ReplyDeleteOne is struck by the distinct lack of urgency that the race stewards show when handling Massa. For all they know, he could be choking to death in his own blood, and the medical personnel just stands there, with hands in their pockets.
ReplyDeleteDo we have an explanation for how a suspension spring could come off a multimillion euro F1 car ! ? A spring-damper unit is bolted to the car at both ends, how could a spring possibly come off it unless the unit itself is coming loose?
