Turkish GP: cheer for the underdog.

In a Grand Prix that was as devoid of surprises as it was spectators, the only real pleasure was to watching the two drivers most in the... "hot seat" at the moment put on the kinds of moves that, had their names been Hamilton or Raikkonen, would have been hailed as definitive proof of a second coming. I'm referring to Kovalainen's great defense against the vastly superior Brawn of Rubens Barrichello and Nelson Piquet's exquisit smackdown outside pass on World Champion Lewis Hamilton.

Barrichello no doubt must have complained bitterly about the slower Heikki daring to stand in his way. In past races we have seen Barrichello's histrionics when he felt held up, usually big, dramatic hand gestures. Barrichello is a man who's career is coming to a close in a repeat of his biggest nightmare, to be a second driver in a top team. In fact, more than one source claims the only reason Rubens is at Brawn is because of the testing restrictions which did not allow for Bruno Senna to be in the car at all before the season. Clearly frustrated, he unleashed the frustrated man's move: the impossible divebomb. Not satisfied with his first failed move, Barrichello later repeats on Sutil's Force India.

Nelson Piquet is another F1 driver everyone, not always unfairly, pretty much writes off. The kind of move he dealt the mighty Hamilton however, was something out of his father's playbook. If Piquet has not found the proper mindset and motivation to raise his game, it is clear that somewhere there is the talent. Kudos Nelsiño.

Oh the race results? Button dominated, Webber had a good race, Vettel showed he is human but Red Bull gave blatant team orders. Ferrari, who would haveve been raked over the coals for a radio transmission like Red Bull's, was nowhere and BMW showed a small improvement.

  1. Heikki drove like a dick if you ask me. Not once but twice Rubins had 1/2 a car to the inside of him but he just drove like there was no one else on the track. Sure Rubins came from a couple car lenghts back, but why bother fight him that hard? Heikki was on a one stopper with a uber slow car and Rubins was on a two stopper with the fastest car in the feild.

  2. If you ask me Rubens is a dick in and out of an F1 car. Why bother fight him? Really? Thats called racing. Rubens drove like a dick.

  3. I guess what settles it is that he pulled the same move on Sutil, In both cases Barrichello was nowhere near past the other car.

Heikki being on a one stopper means nothing, there is no rule that says you need to pull over for those on different strategies, it's not like he was being lapped, it was for position.

  4. neither's a dick. they both race in f1 and want to be in front of the maximum amount of cars possible. they wouldn't be in f1 if that wasn't the case...

  5. I don't get it, piquet finished 16th and hamilton finished 13th ?

what makes piquet so spectacular, he couldn't beat hamilton on his worst day. Besides how many wdc's let alone race wins does ol' nelsino have ?

  6. I think the video of the pass speaks for itself. On that corner, on that day when they were going at it, Piquet put a hella move on the Hamster! you can't deny that

  7. Regaurdless I guess you could say all of these guys drive like dicks, but Heikki just stood out to me in this race. Sure they are racing for posistion, but after watching the first few laps again I noticed that Rubins was wheel to wheel with him on the exit of T1 at one point and Heikki still ran him wide off the track.

I know every posistion is important, but still these guys treat eachother with no respect at all. If someone outbrakes you going into the corner and is wheel to wheel on exit and they run you off the track for having the balls to pass on the outside..... that is just a dickhead thing to do. I can understand Rubins frustrations while he was trying to overtake during the race and Im sure thats what pushed him to making contact with other cars.

  8. Rubens looked like an ass during this race. As AC said, he made attempts to pass in corners where he clearly would not make it through and as a result, he ended up torpedoing Sutil, so as usual, Rubens is the dick - making Coulthard type moves to get an inch and then screwing it up by a mile.

  9. I would not be SO harsh on Barrichello, but for sure he should know better. WHat makes me mad about him is that it's always someone else's fault.

  11. Either way I root for the underdog piquet. With an obviously slower car than mclaren he gave us the viewers something fun to watch. and thats what matters.
