Is Mark Webber Really Headed For Porsche?

Red Bull want the previously energy drink sponsored imi Raikkonen in his seat. Lotus will do what it can to hold on to the Kimster but Webber's position is tenuous.

The rumor has been that Webber would move to Porsche to race Endurance. True? False? What's certain is that Webber owned a GT2 RS and appeared in a recent Porsche video. Draw your own conclusions.

  1. How likely is it that Kimi would end up at Red Bull? I keep on hearing that, but I cringe when I think about the team dynamics between Kimi and Vettel.

    1. I don't see this happening either. Kimi has it made at Lotus and the only reason I could see him possibly leaving is for more money. He's obviously got a competitive car that suits his driving style. There's far too much drama with Vettel at RB. If Kimi goes there and immediately starts outpacing Vettel regularly then what do they do? Vettel will start whining like a baby and Marko will lose his crap. I just don't see it. RB will get an underling like Massa is at Ferrari to be with Vettel until he decides to leave.

    2. Yeah, Red Bull is clearly Vettel's team. Surely, team manipulation doesn't explain all of Mark's performance woes, however, I do have a hard time believing that someone who's been in F1 for 12 seasons now can't figure out how to make a start. I can't see Kimi coming on to a team where he'd be asked to play second fiddle, willing or unwilling. As Kimi would say "iamnobodysbitch". I see them pulling someone from Toro Rosso for that job.

  2. All I can think about right now is his "Soft tops for soft cocks" comment for some reason.

I could see him just being frustrated with the whole politics of F1 and it would be nice to enter a series where he would be the proverbial big fish in a small pond.

    soft top = no top?

  3. I think all parties are doing a little posturing (aka "covering their ass") at the moment. In negotiations one must appear to have options so they can appear to have leverage. I've always figured that if a #2 at a top team gets ousted, he's guaranteed a two year deal with another top-team or at the least a mid-field team. Webber is an affable guy who knows how to function within a team. He knows who signs his checks and he does what he's told to do. Like the rest of us, we are all at the mercy of our employers wishes. Consequently, I think it's a little too early for Mark to voluntarily leave Milton Keynes for Stuttgart. Besides Mark and the Mulsanne Straight don't get along too well. And Kimi isn't got get # 1 status at Red Bull.

    1. Given that Webber is now the oldest SOB in F1, his 'sell by' date is rapidly approaching. It isn't much of a stretch to think that he'll be sourcing out his options after he 'retires' from F1 - and he'll probably be getting a decent paycheck wherever he goes.

Porsche has a solid reputation and operation in the various endurance series so they'd be the logical destination for a veteran F1 driver who still wants to drive competitively.

...one wonders why grandpa Schumi hasn't taken a seat in DTM ot at LMS. Imagine the publicity and fan response if he popped up as a driver at the 'Ring24hr. or Spa. etc...

  4. The rumour mill I have my ear to suggests Porsche will pull a shock re-entry to F1 in 2014... With Webbo heading it up for three years. "Paddock whispers" I hear.

Sorry, can't provide a published link...
