Go to Senna's grave and tell him what his nephew did today...

Newly crowned triple World Champion Sebastian Vettel missed a good chance to keep his mouth shut and come across like a decent person Sunday after the race.

Interviewer:
"..and then comes the nephew of Aryton Senna, and here in brazil crashes in the back of your car, what did you think at that moment?"

Vettel: (smiles) "Well let's see, the grave of Ayrton Senna is here in Sau Paulo, at the gaveyard in Murumbi. One has to go there and tell him what is nephew did today. which did not help us ..."

Aside from being a dolt for invoking Ayrton's name in Brazil, Vettel is completely in the wrong about the incident with which he almost threw away his championship.
After a bad start, Vettel is P7 and way wide coming into Descida do Logo, Raikkonen almost hits him, di Resta and Senna are just behind on the inside. Vettel decides to take Turn 4  like he's leading the race and there is nobody else close by.  Senna, who had gone for the gap has no place to go.
Surely Vettel must have looked in the mirrors...

Contrast that with Alonso who takes a much later apex and leaves just enough room for Hulkenberg, just in case.

That Vettel's car was not seriously damaged is a testament to huge luck though if you listen to Red Bull, everyone's out to get them and they had everything against them.   Bah, I'm guessing  all the whining is studied for sympathy because 98% of the public thinks Alonso deserved it since he actually had to fight as the underdog.

(thanks to Sergio and /abductee for the help with the video and translation!)

Allan McNish agrees BTW... though they were being awfully kind there to Vettel on Sky.

  1. If Vettel had worked as hard as Alonso did all season, then I doubt we'd be hearing this kind of crap from him. The struggle makes you humble and this kid has a team that's hoisted him on their shoulders since Day 1. I haven't talked to a single F1 fan that's pleased about Vettel winning his 3rd WDC. This was a championship won by a rubber nose and luck.

I'm completely over Red Bull and their finger pointing. All their woes are everyone else's fault. I don't buy it for a second. Someone should sit Vettel down and teach him about being a gracious winner. He's certainly not getting the respect of his fellow drivers.

    1. You're right, Ferrari isn't behind Alonso at all, and Renault weren't behind him either. The only team that has given Alonso equal treatment to his teammate (McLaren) saw Alonso out-scored by a rookie.

While Vettel is the driver who won a race in a Toro Rosso. A fricken Minardi for christsakes!

I rate Alonso very highly as a driver, even higher than Vettel. But to say that Vettel only succeeds in superior machinery is being ignorant of history. And to say that Vettel enjoys a higher position in his team than Alonso is delusional given the reality of the situation.

    2. You mean Vettel doesn't work hard? You mean Alonso is HUMBLE? That's a joke.

    3. Vettel is either too immature, a jerk, or both. He's a coddled, spoiled brat. I'm also fed up with Red Bull's hypocritical finger pointing. Hans Stuck was spot on when he stated earlier this year that his own countryman needed to learn how to lose. He has a lot to learn about sportsmanship. He's been exceedingly lucky of late (Abu Dhabi and this incident in Brazil) One day that pendulum is going to swing the other way

    4. Sorry Cameron, you like 95% of the rest of the Formula 1 audience can't count. They were tied on points, Lewis didn't outscore him. On countback Lewis had one more second place than Alonso, and averaged only .3 positions better. On paper he was beaten, but not as soundly as people like you try to make it out to be, much less how inaccurate and completely wrong everyone like you has been since 2007. They were basically dead even over the entire season, learn how to count. I wish people like you would quit saying Lewis outscored him when that is simply a lie perpetuated.

  2. I like Bruno, but he's making another rookie mistake in that corner. He's optimistically trying to out-brake three cars, and carrying way too much speed at the apex. He understeers wide of Hulkenburg's path at the apex. There actually is room for him between Vettel and the apex (counting the curbing), but he is going way too fast to use it.

Regarding McNish, he shows poor understanding of FIA flags in that same video. Vettel passed under solid yellow/red debris lights, not blinking yellow caution lights. This can be seen by the lack of yellow flag indicators on Vettel's dashboard.

All-in-all, a lot of hand-wringing by people who favor Alonso. Keep in mind that Alonso was the only driver racing 22 drivers all season, not 23 like the rest of the field. Webber did Vettel no favors right up until the end, Vettel had to beat him fair and square.

    1. Cameron, you are so right. And that DRS sign totally got in his way and somehow wasn't penalized. It's like Vettel had to race 24 drivers.

    2. I'm not sure what video you're looking at, I see no understeer at all from Senna, none.

    3. Have you ever *seen* understeer in a F1 car? Its rarely something you can see, only something the driver feels.

But out-braking two cars on corner entry can easily cause excessive speed at the apex, and understeer also explains why Bruno is wider at the apex than he needs to be given the position of Vettel. Hulkenberg nailed the apex, as you would want to do if you are going through a turn two-wide. Bruno is wide of it. There's a reason why Hulkenberg is getting a new contract, and Bruno likely won't return next year.

    5. He completed the pass before the yellow flag zone began. The yellow flag zone doesn't start until the first yellow blinking light. His dash is showing that he's not in the yellow flag zone yet (there are yellow lights to each side of the rev counter when in a yellow flag zone).

You'd think people who read a racing blog would know something about racing...

    6. Cameron, you can see understeer in an F1 car, it's easy, go watch Alonso's qualy laps and if you still can't see understeer in an F1 car I suggest you find another sport to troll.

Regardless of who was in the right or wrong as far as the driving goes, Vettel's comments after the race were completely in-appropriate, dickheadish and childish and have lost him all of my respect and more.

Shame on you Seb, you Fail at being human

    8. Cameron - instead of just assuming Vettel is perfect, try looking at the other cars around Vettel and Bruno. Everyone else is following the same line as Bruno, and Di Resta is following the line that a driver who is coming in from wide should be on - ie not the apex. Vettel was extremely close to not even reaching Senna, because he almost hit Di Resta, and it appears he was on the brakes earlier than he should have been based on the fact that Kimi almost crashed into him. This crash was all on Vettel, and it would have been avoided if he had just taken the line that every other driver would have taken from there.

    9. Even if Bruno took the tightest line possible around that corner, Vettel still would have hit him.

    10. You have no idea if Vettel got help from Webber during the season but I would bet a million dollars he did and on more than 1 occasion. They use codes so people don't know what they are saying when an order is given. Remember when Webber got in trouble when Vettel crashed into him when trying to pass for the lead but the team got made at Webber instead and no one could figure out why, well he was told to let Vettel pass and he didn't and they crashed that is why Webber was in trouble with the team.

  3. He is the F1 champion for 2012.
    OK.

But he is a massive wanker.

Hope he will become a bit more intellingent and learn how to have respect when he will come out of puberty.

    1. Poor style, Vettel.
Bruno Senna may have made a mistake, but what's that got to do with a dead legend? Grow up, Vettel. Or just be humble when you talk to the media - we know that the rest around you are "cucumbers" when you don't win.

  4. Joking with a dead idol in his home country? I can accept him being a jerk, he is not the first and won't be the last.

Discussing a racing incident and playing the blame game after _winning_ the WDC for the 3rd time? How insecure can you be? And most important, why is he still...?

  6. Vettel was completely out of line to say that...he needs to grow up

  7. The last two seasons I've gone from cheering for Vettel to actively rooting against him as he's gone from a young kid achieving great things to a brat with serious entitlement issues. I know Schumacher was a premadonna but it seems Vettel is actively campaigning to take that title over too. His comments after the race were uncalled for an unsporting given he'd just claimed his 3rd WDC. Vettel has managed to make himself sound like more of a petulant child than Hamilton did last season. Impressive.

I'm particularly pleased with the fact that Webber more or less admitted prior to the start that he didn't intend to help Vettel. I'll continue pulling for Webber if only for that. I hope that Christian Horner and Helmut Marko are happy with the terrible little monster they've created - I have a feeling this attitude will eventually turn on Red Bull too.

  10. He just made a typically terrible German joke. They have the worst sense of humour. Case in point.

Vettel is lucky to have not been damaged in that crash. For that he doesn't deserve the title. He also should have received a penalty, but it was the first lap and they tend not to give penalties on starts.

He also made similarly ill advised and dangerous passes in Abu Dhabi, and was luck to not be knocked out or be given penalties.

  12. I admit he is a great driver, but I hate him because of his sense of 'humour' and comments! Maybe he should go back to school and learn how to behave Mr Vettel!
