Who is the top passer in F1 so far this year?

Thank you for voting in our poll. Once again it looks like Lewis fans got a tad mesmerized by the chinstrap and the diamond earrings (all right...settle down). While Hamilton received 19 % of the votes, his 20 passes for position put him only in fourteenth place for this completely meaningless, summer filler, classification.

Kamui Kobayashi got a lot of votes but he was not even "on the podium"! The top spots are perhaps a bit of a surprise:

Most passes for position
  1. Mark Webber 39
  2. Sebastien Buemi 36
  3. Jenson Button 35
  4. Kamui Kobayashi 32
  5. Paul di Resta 29
  6. Jaime Alguesauri 29
  7. Felipe Massa 28

  12. Rubens Barrichello 22
  13. Pastor Maldonado 22
  14. Lewis Hamilton 20
  15. Vitaly Petrov 20
  16. Fernando Alonso 14
The most passed?

  5. Jaime Alguersauri 29
  6. Kamui Kobayashi 29
  7. Pastor Maldonado 29
  8. Jerome D'Ambrosio 27
  9. Tonio Liuzzi 24

  1. When you have had one of the best cars all year, yet you're one of the worst starters in all of F1, I suppose you would end up getting the most passes for position when you drop 6 places every start :P

  2. It's the most ridiculous classification ever, but hey, it's august. Just wanted to see if HAM fans are awake :)

  3. I still think Lewis is going to be one of the greatest drivers of all time by the end of his career

  4. well, obviously the data should be weighted.
    a pass alone cannot tell you that much;
for example: Mark Webber has 39 passes, Heikki Kovalainen was passed 39 times. if webber passed kovalinen all the time that's not very impressive, is it?

not taking into account secondary variables can be a bitch ... see for example:

Stats don't show up some things eg Button in Canada.
Webber, Alonso, Hamilton & Button are all pretty close.
Massa, Rosberg, Petrov & Maldonado show poor conversion from quali to race finish.
Heidfeld, Kobayashi and both the Toro Rossos show very good improvement from quali to race finish.

  6. You could take the top half of the Most Passes for Position list and create a new list labeled Underachieved in Qualifying.
