BMW X1, what do you think?

I'll leave comments to you if you have any...

  1. I think it looks terrible. I'm not a huge fan of these types of mini urban SUVs though. But, even if I was a fan of this segment, I don't think I'd like its styling. I can't imagine someone liking the way this looks over, say, a GLK...

Also, it's important to note that I'm a BMW driver/fan/brand whore. This whole X1 effort just seems a little half-assed to me.

  2. Great! Another highrise and overweight impractical car nobody needs... Unless you are allowed to drive on your local sandy beach on your daily commute!!!

When will the marketers and people wake up! Our roads are 99.999% paved! Who needs SUVs. Use your R&D efforts designing and building cool looking and lightweight mini-van or wagon type cars!

  3. Looks rubbish! I drive a classic BMW everyday, and this is NOT a future classic.

I think BMW needs to concentrate on making a small SEDAN (the 1 series has obviously flopped) that isn't overpriced but handles better than a Mini.

  4. @CG I think BMW thought of that by removing any actual Off-Roading abilities from the X1. Not that most of the competitors have not done the same.

  6. I love how CG is the only person calling for more minivans.

  7. Am I the only one who thinks it looks like its the same size as an X3, inviting the question WHY?

  8. I didn't like the X5 and the X3, but I do like th look of this. Don't know why, but I think because it doesn't look this big and high than other SUVs. Anyway, I wouldn't buy it because it's too heavy and unsporty and I can't find anything it could do better than a normal 3 series BMW.

  9. Propeller-Freep, Minivan is just a word that illustrates a really practical vehicle. Space for 6 or 7 + weekend bags for them all.
I challenge ALL car manufacturers to design cool, light and fun to drive practical family cars. An M5 Touring is a good start, but I'm sure the propeller heads can do better if they just stop trying SUVsize planet earth...

Also, the AoO demographics is not really filled with father of 3 types like me...

  10. M version of X6, X5...5 Series GT, 3 Series GT...Now this.

BMW is getting very boring nowadays. Just like Toyota has been. It's so sad that a company that builds such great sports cars starting to be boring.

  12. Interesting comments, my understanding is that size wise this is a replacement for the current X3 which is about to get redesigned and , I imagine, upsized to "old" X5 dimensions. This segment is super competitive right now, especially in Europe, with the VW Tiguan, the Audi Q5, the Ford Kuga etc. So it's not surprising BMW feels it has to have a player in there. As far as the lines...well, maybe it won't look as bad in person, the 5 series GT looks MUCH better in person than in any pictures I have seen so...

  14. I would have to disagree with that in this case, BMW will have a version with a 1.8l Diesel that will get 40+mpg. That's better than a Prius. Can't blame BMW, blame those who believe you absolutely need a lousy inefficient old technology engine to commute or drive the kids to soccer. ...

  15. BMW might be headed the way of GM and Chrysler if they keep this up. What it boils down to is too many models! How many more buyers will there be for all these different models? Not many and certianly not enough to make up the cost for developing all these over weight impractal cars/suv/trucks. 2003 is the last year I really like, except for the new Z4.

  16. i hate SUVs as much as the next person, and my dream car is a 3 wagon (i currently drive an e46 sedan). however:

    - this is not anything close to a traditional SUV in size or profile. the ground clearance looks more akin to a subaru forrester or audi all-road, which do not completely sacrifice car-like handling.

    - you guys must not live in a snowy climate, go on long road trips, own a dog or two, buy furniture at Ikea, etc. etc... yes, a 3 touring comes close to the utility, but the extra interior height can come in handy.

    - the "it's too heavy" argument would stick if the X1 didn't weigh around 3300 lbs as C&D is reporting. that's about the same as the 3 touring, and 600lbs lighter than the X3. an upcoming RWD 20d version will supposedly get 47mpg in the EU cycle.

    - the more upright seating position is also a huge help for anyone with back/hip problems or other types of injuries. it also looks like the perfect step-in height for the average adult - getting down into a 3 series can be difficult for many older people.

i would never choose an X3 over a 3 touring, despite the X3 far outselling any BMW touring in the States (my dealer does not even bother stocking the touring), and i'm not sold on the X1 looks, but in terms of concept and practicality, i would seriously consider it.

  17. Nice model. I liked it. But i would prefer the new 2009 BMW X5 is an attractive, and best selling, mid size, luxurious SUV vehicle. It has many features like high tech gadgetry, remote operating one-touch power windows, dual-zone automatic climate control and AM/FM/CD/MP3 12-speaker audio with auxiliary input etc.
