Parabéns Ayrton

Picture by Mark Wohlwender from 50+ a personal Photographic Memory of Ayrton Senna

Qualifying in the 80s was a chaotic affair, Senna's great skill was in knowing how to find the right moment to go on track and like a zen archer. nail that perfect lap.

Senna, aside from thrashing the whole field which is no surprise given the dominance of the Mclaren Honda that season, out qualified his teammate Alain Prost by an incredible 1.7 seconds.

'89 was the first year of a new formula, out with the turbos, in with the 3500cc normally aspirated. For the nostalgics out there, it's worth noting that only 10 of 26 starters completed the race and that Senna's pole lap of 1:38.041 was almost 8 seconds slower than Mark Webber's time in 2013.

Also, as it has become a bit of a tradition for Axis: "Senna, the will to win".
Not as "hollywood" as the Senna documentary but more honest and accurate. Enjoy.

Parabéns Ayrton!

  3. Did Honda give him more qualifying power for qualifying or was he really that quick? How did Prost often have the faster race laps? I guess we'll never know.
